The Marathon is a long-distance race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometer (26.21 miles). The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of... the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens who reported the victory. According to the legend, in 490BC, Pheidippides delivered the news of the Greek Army winning a crucial battle against the invading Persian Army, and then promptly dropped dead. The first Olympic Marathon was run as a part of the first modern Olympics in 1896, starting at Marathon Bridge and ending at the stadium in Athens, Greece. It was comprised of just 18 men on the starting line, and was won in a time of 2:58:50. Today, the current marathon records are 2:01:39 and 2:14:04 for men and women respectively.
