Where the mighty Matterhorn mountain stands today, a different type of mountain or hill once stood. Holiday Hill stood as a buffer between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Created from the dirt excavated during the construction of the castle moat, it featured landscaped hiking trails for guests to enjoy. Just a year after Disneyland’s opening, a support column for the newly constructed Skyway attraction was built on top of the hill. To pair the colorful transport gondola attraction with a more proper setting, Walt Disney went in search of a mountain and found it while on set filming Third Man on the Mountain. The Skyway tower determined the position and height of this new Disneyland icon, which would be completed on June 14, 1959. #DisneyMemoryMonday #DisneylandHistory

Time for another Disney Halloween fun fact! Did you know the pipe organ seen in the ballroom sequence of the Haunted Mansion was Captain Nemo’s pipe organ from the classic Disney film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? After completion of the film, the pipe organ found its first Disneyland home in Tomorrowland, as part of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Exhibit (1955-1966). Upon the exhibit’s closing, the pipe organ was set aside until installed in the haunted halls of the Haunted Mansion just three years later. #HauntedMansion #DisneylandHistory

Did you know that the exterior of the Haunted Mansion was completed for the opening of New Orleans Square in 1966 but did not welcome guests to its haunted halls for another three years?! We all know just beyond the entrance of Tomorrowland we can take an intergalactic adventure through space aboard Star Tours The Adventures Continue, but before hitting the jump to Lightspeed, guests visiting Disneyland Park could embark on a different type of adventure. Opening in 1967 and created in partnership with experts at the Monsanto Company, Adventures Thru Inner Space would shrink guests to the size of a molecule to travel through a mighty microscope into the realm of a snowflake.
