Growing up in Burbank, Burton said the seasons sort-of rolled into one, so the seasonal changes were marked more by holiday decorations than the weather. In 1977, a former oil-drilling site, and a popular spot for the then new sport of motocross, nicknamed 'Motorcycle Hill', was acquired for what is now called Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Center. The area has since expanded, and includes the Ballona Creek watershed that is a wildlife corridor from the hills through Culver City to the Ballona Wetlands. The original area designated as Griffith Park, formerly known as Rancho Los Feliz was initially an Ostrich Farm. Although ostrich feathers were commonly used in making women's hats in the late-19th century, Griffith J. Griffith's purpose was primarily to create interest in his nearby property developments, which were supposedly haunted by the ghost of Antonio Feliz, the previous owner of the property.
