WELCOME TO GEMSTONE MONTH: ALEXANDRITE: This is one of the rarest of all coloured gemstones and is famed for its colour change from green in daylight to red under incandescent light.... Alexandrite is a variety of Chrysoberyl, a lighter yellowish coloured gemstone. Due to the presence of oxide of chromium, it appears dull green by daylight (which is rich in blue rays) but by electric light it appears yellowish or reddish-yellow, and by soft candle-light (which is rich in red rays) it appears reddish. It was originally found in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1830, the year Alexander the Second came of age and so inspired its name. Latterly, a variety that changes colour from dark olive-green to brownish-red has been found in Sri Lanka. Although the Sri Lankan Alexandrite is generally larger, it is less valuable than the bluer variety from Russia.
