Dear DSR Community, We at PARCA - Partners & Advocates for Remarkable Children & Adults hope you are staying well and safe, and are grateful that all of our clients and staff are doing well through the stressors of the pandemic, the economy, fires, extreme weather, and tumultuous times. As you may know, another heartbreaking tragedy (https://n.pr/3k7V3mq) has taken place in Utah, involving a 13-year-old-boy with autism who was shot by police after his mother made a 911 call..., asking for a crisis intervention team, because he was having a mental breakdown. His mother says she told police he was not armed. There are differing reports of what happened, and there is no cell phone video of this incident, but the young man was not armed. I did see a CNN clip of his mother, and I felt her utter anguish as she sobbed through trying to describe what she saw and heard. Linden Cameron is in serious condition with many internal injuries. We send our love, support and prayers to Linden and his family. Yesterday, I had to brace myself for the onslaught of feeling that has accompanied far too many tragic incidents recently. After the murder of George Floyd, we have more awareness, but we have such a long way to go to fix all that is broken. I woke up thinking there was something wrong with my clock because it was so dark. Then I saw the eerie red skies from the ongoing fires. My mind searched for a way to find an inner sense of peace and joy in the midst of so much that is difficult, and it went immediately to all the things I am grateful for. Among them, I am grateful for all of you who support and love our clients, and live your lives with compassion, empathy, cooperation, forgiveness, and helpfulness. Those words have become clichés, but in all of you, I find great hope -- because you walk the walk and live those words. I am grateful for each and every one of you. We do not have magic wands to make all the bad stuff go away, but we do have each other, living in a loving way and being kind to each other. Dear Devil's Slide Ride community, First and foremost, we do sincerely hope you and your loved ones are safe. Working with vulnerable populations as we do, we never take that fact for granted. As we closely follow the local, state and federal recommendations, and given the high uncertainty of the current environment, it is with a heavy heart that we announce we are canceling this year’s Devil’s Slide Ride and Run. The wellbeing of our community, participants, volunteers and ...clientsmany of whom are at higher riskis our first priority. We will miss seeing you this year and urge you to sign up for next year’s event on May 22, 2021. And we are thrilled to announce a new way to stay fit this year, in lieu of our in-person event: The PARCA (Virtual) Remarkable Challenge (PRC). Get motivated and conquer new challenges, all while supporting individuals with developmental disabilities! Our goal is to raise $30,000 with 100% of the proceeds going towards a special needs fund for PARCA clients and families who are out of work, short on food, and/or cannot afford childcare due to COVID-19.
