UPDATE: CalTrans reports the road is open, although flagging operations are underway while they clean up rock fall. Good morning Del Norte. We've just been notified by CalTrans of a rock slide at Last Chance Grade (you didn't think we'd get through 2020 without that happening, did you?). There are no reported injuries and they were able to let some cars through - but it will be closed for a period of time today for repairs. No ETA for reopening at this point, but when we receive more information we'll let you know.

Unfortunately KBHX (Eureka NEXRAD) Radar went down in the last hour (between 10:30 and 11 AM PST Sunday morning). Technicians are trouble-shooting the problem a...nd will try to get it operational as soon as possible. We'll be continuing to monitor satellite, surface observations, and lightning networks. Fortunately, no lightning detected in the last couple of hours around northwest California. Occasional heavy downpours will be possible into the early evening hours, particularly from coastal Humboldt Del Norte counties, with isolated lightning possible with the heaviest cells. Here's a look at the simulated radar (ARW model) expected through tonight.

Large breaking waves are expected on Northwest California beaches Sunday afternoon through Monday. High tides will occur around 10:00 AM PST on Sunday and arou...nd 10:30 AM PST on Monday. The largest breaking waves will be 19 to 21 feet and arrive Sunday night. These will subside back towards 19 feet for Monday morning. With these conditions in place, people should stay off the rocks and jetties as large waves will crash over coastal features that may not normally get wet during smaller wave conditions. Don’t let the ocean fool you! Large waves can catch you off guard if you get to close to the water’s edge or out on rocks and jetties. Rising tides Monday morning will increase the risk of getting trapped or swept off rocks. As always, never turn your back to the ocean! See more
