Carolina was the liaison between indigenous groups fighting against SB1070 and the Unitarian Universalists who answered to call to come to Phoenix and be in solidarity with Puente Arizona, Tonatierra Nahuacalli and NDLON. She also advocated to ensure that the entire denomination voted to repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery. She dedicated her life to the dismantling of white supremacist systems of oppression. Those who knew her will continue her work and will continue to oppose racist legislation and support members of this continent's First Nations.
"With her electronic shackle, Carmen risked reaching the border fence. She dared, scared to death, just because Carlos, her husband, deported four months ago, told her that she had to see her in person, that it was very important, not to be missed! If the GPS signal on the shackle was lost for being so close to the border fence, they would probably come looking for her to deport her. Yet she approached the woven steel mesh. "Carlos, Carlos, here I am," Carmen said through the... wall. For two seconds there was silence, but suddenly on the Mexican side a group shouted, "Congratulations and immediately burst into the Let's celebrate, gentlemen, with joy , this day of pleasure so blissful , of a northern trio. "I brought a serenade to my love," Carlos told me, "because it was her birthday." He was deported four months ago and they had not seen each other. Carmen's birthday was the perfect occasion. Carlos not only brought her serenade but also four of her ten siblings and a lot of nephews and grandchildren she didn't know. Amid tears of joy, Carmen sipped with a straw pineapple juice that her husband gave her from Mexico. "I'm in shock," Carmen told me; "I was scared to death and I find this, it's so nice ..." The sisters had not seen each other for 15 years. Carlos never committed any crimes or offenses in San Diego. In 25 years, only two traffic tickets (for driving without a license), but then California granted licenses to the undocumented and the fines were over, except that in March in a migra checkpoint they reviewed his license, realized his condition and arrested him. Days later they also arrested Carmen; It was part of a racist offensive against migrants. Carmen remained on probation with her shackle because four minor US-born children depend on her and now she will have to prove in a court that she deserves to remain. Meanwhile Carlos already works in Tijuana and, although he makes very little money, he dedicates it to helping his family on the other side, even this time he used it for the serenade and the pineapple juice, because I have never stopped celebrating my Carmen's birthday, and a wall is not going to stop me.

Law and order shouldn’t be a phrase that only applies to the poor and powerless in America. And deported veteran shouldn’t be a phrase at all.

The Easter miracle is that of resurrectionof death and rebirth. The empty tomb. The empty chrysalis. Absolute loss. Absolute possibility. What has been re-born for you?
Congratulations to First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego for reaching this goal.
