Dr. Jennifer L. Eberhardt is a Stanford professor and MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient. She also is one of my new heroes. Check out this series of short videos in which Dr. Eberhardt explains the science of implicit bias. You might also want to check out her book, Biased: Uncovering the Hidden Prejudice That Shapes What We See, Think, and Do.
It's clear that for those of us in helping roles, we must take an active stance in dismantling systems that oppress people. Why? Because they're bad for your mental health. Here's a video of Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis explaining why we must move from "cultural competence" to "antiracism". Now.
If you’re feeling defeated and uncertain this morning, it might help to know that that’s normal.
Should I leave the house, or should I stay? Should I go to the store, or should I make do with what we have? Should I keep caring about deadlines, or should I give myself a break? Should I take the risk and visit (at a distance) with that friend, or wait for another couple of weeks? Whew. Too. Many. Decisions.
As we're hunkering down with family members and connecting with others, far and wide, it occurs to me that old stuff might be coming up for some people. Feelings are data! What are yours trying to tell you?
If you're a therapist, this is a great guide for working with helpers who might be seeking services. We're talking nurses, teachers, physicians, and fellow therapists. We'll all need support to get through this.
I may or may not be using some of these tips today (ahem). Nicely done, Aidee! Be gentle with each other, folks.
Hobbies are...lifesaving? This actually feels really important right now. I know that the people in my life who seem to weather the storm well are the knitters, bakers, woodworkers, and chefs. This article reminds me to 1) give myself permission to create, 2) stop worrying about whether the outcome is "worthwhile", and 3) make stuff ESPECIALLY when it seems like it's a waste of time.
Feeling oppressed by boredom? It might be grief.
