During times of stress, we’re often encouraged to spend time and money on ourselves as a form of self-care. It’s even become synonymous in pop culture to treat yo self, a phrase popularized on Parks and Recreation. This attitude was all about splurging on luxury items, overindulging in everything you want, regardless if your budget allowed for it. But this perception of self-care is flawed. True self-care does not take a lot of money to do because true self-care includes co...nsidering your finances. https://debtwave.org/50-free-affordable-self-care-ideas/ #selfcare #personalfinance

Let’s play a game. I’ll give you the start of a sentence and you fill in the missing word with the first thing that comes to mind. Money is the root of all ____. Earning money is _____. Money doesn’t grow on _____.... Rich people are ______. How many of you answered those statements similar to what’s below? Money is the root of all EVIL. Earning money is HARD. Money doesn’t grow on TREES. Rich people are BAD. How many of you answered those statements a little differently? Are your answers closer to these ones? Money is the root of all FREEDOM. Earning money is EASY. Money doesn’t grow on INACTION. Rich people are GIVING. If your answers for the missing words more closely resembled the first set chances are the story you are telling yourself subconsciously about money is a negative one. If your answers were closer to the second set, your money story is likely more positive. Whether your money story is positive or negative is important to know because it ultimately impacts the financial decisions you make.

When you take a vacation, what is the first thing that you do before you go on that vacation? You plan, right? You either book your flight or set the GPS in your phone or car if you are driving. Planning helps us maximize our vacation time so that we get to maximize the pleasure we get from the vacation. Why is it that we plan for leisure, but we tend to avoid planning our financial future?... A budget acts as a plan to help us achieve our financial goals which can be as or even more satisfying than even the best of vacations.

Credit card debt is stressful. Add a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, home-schooling, racial tension, and political chaos on top of that debt and it’s no wonder more Americans than ever report feelings of anxiety and depression. During times of stress, we’re often encouraged to spend time and money on ourselves as a form of self-care. It’s even become synonymous in pop culture to treat yo self, a phrase popularized on Parks and Recreation. This attitude was all about ...splurging on luxury items, overindulging in everything you want, regardless if your budget allowed for it. But this perception of self-care is flawed. True self-care does not take a lot of money to do because true self-care includes considering your finances. The whole concept of self-care has really strayed from the original intent, and become a meme unto itself, said Kathleen Dahlen deVos, a psychotherapist in San Francisco. When I talk with my clients about self-care, rarely am I encouraging practices and habits that cost money. In fact, spending excessive money or funds we don’t have In the name of ‘self-care’ can actually be distressing, destructive and work against our mental and emotional wellbeing. #MentalHealth #SelfCare
