Be sure to check out Leimert Park Live! Thursday July 30th 7-8:30pm. Free, but you must RSVP! https://www.lacma.org/event/leimert-park-live Join us for a virtual exploration of Leimert Park, known as one of the centers of both historical and contemporary African American art, music, and culture in Los Angeles. Fondly referred to as the village, Leimert Park has cultivated artistic giants across the disciplines of music and visual arts, including Barbara Morrison and Betye ...Saar. These two icons were recognized and celebrated by Leimert Park cultural institutions like The World Stage and Brockman Gallery before their mainstream success. Griots will guide viewers on a tour of Leimert Park and share how art, music, and activism have thrived in the community for decades. Guides include activist, artist, and co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Patrisse Cullors; co-lead organizer of We Love Leimert, Kaya Dantzler; CEO of Urban Design Center, Sherri Franklin; founder of the California Jazz & Blues Museum, Barbara Morrison; artist Alison Saar; and co-owner of Sikas, Milan Wilkinson. Following the virtual tour, arts and culture leaders will discuss the revival of L.A.’s Black art renaissance in a cypher-style conversation. The cypher style is a nod to the hip-hop tradition in which poetry, music, and art were improvisationally exchanged. Instead of an exchange of lyrics, this will be an exchange of ideas in which these experts will draw connections among the past, present, and future of Leimert Park as it continues to be an epicenter of art, music, and activism in Los Angeles. Participants include historian and curator at the Autry Museum, Tyree Boyd-Pates; founder of Kaos Network, Ben Caldwell; co-lead organizer of We Love Leimert, Kaya Dantzler; and art collector and advocate, Dr. V. Joy Simmons. Moderated by independent curator and producer Autumn Williams. This program is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs presented in partnership with Brilliantly Black Collective, Kaos Network, LA Commons, and We Love Leimert.

Valley Cultural Foundation has been supporting Emerging Artists for the last three (3) years, providing them a means to perform in a live, professional, established concert setting where they can promote and refine their talents. In an effort to continue its Emerging Artist program, and in compliance with the 2020 restrictions for live music due to the COVID-19 pandemic, VCF has created Concerts on the Couch. This online series is a way to entertain safely and promote this year’s Emerging Artists. Valley Cultural Foundation will release one video block per week, featuring songs by three emerging artists, and will continue to release a new video each week throughout the summer. Concerts on the Couch are release each Monday at 9:00 pm. Visit https://www.valleycultural.org/conce/concerts-on-the-couch/ The Madrid Theatre
