I have been meaning to get to this for a long time now but I wanted to do it when we first started the asparagus season. If you come to Davis Ranch to buy your fresh asparagus you should know the history behind it. Davis Ranch didn't start growing asparagus commercially in the Cosumnes River Valley, that honor is due to George Signorotti. The Signorotti family grew hops in Sloughhouse for many years. George's father Avelino came over from Europe in the early 1900's and began ...working on hop farms in the area. Then he bought property from my Great uncle Walter Grimshaw and from the Belcher family to start his own hop ranch. George Signorotti continued on with the hop farm until the early 1980's when the major breweries decided to grow their own hops in Washington state and planted 11,000 acres all at one time devastating the hop market and the growers in the Cosumnes River Valley. All the hop growers up and down the Cosumnes Valley started to pull their hops out and plant the ground with more profitable crops. It was the same for the Signorotti family even though they held on to the end. As George was looking at his options he reached out to his Son in law from the delta, (his daughter Marian's husband) whose family had grown asparagus for many years. With his Son in laws help he acquired the plants and equipment needed to start growing asparagus. George always kept some hops around to stay the president of the international hop growers association and he filled in the rest of the property with dry beans. In 2005 we lost George after a traffic accident on Jackson highway and the family was left with a decision on what to do with the farm. We approached Virginia with a proposition to buy the asparagus equipment and rent the asparagus fields from them. The asparagus has been a perfect fit into our operating season giving us something to build around so early in the growing year but we didn't start the asparagus industry in Sloughhouse, that honor goes out To George and Virginia Signorotti and the whole extended Signorotti family. For that we thank you! And all of our customers thank you too! I am giving this link to watch a Huell Howser episode featuring George and his family harvesting hops on their farm. It's a real treat that brings back a lot of memories for me growing up with hops outside my bedroom window. I hope you will take a few minutes to watch it! https://blogs.chapman.edu///09/hops-californias-gold-7004/
