As congressional leaders met on Capitol Hill to confirm the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election, violent rioters stormed the building, inciting civil unrest and pausing the proceedings for four hours. President Donald J. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, had called for trial by combat, presumably inspiring rioters to ultimately occupy both chambers of congress, looting and destroying property and infiltrating offices inside the building.

Long Beach State and the Native community are at odds again over claims that the university has plans to build a parking lot on the sacred site of Puvungna. During a Q&A with the Daily Forty-Niner in September of 2019, Conoley said that the university’s parking committee had been considering allocating 500 parking spots onto the land near the Japanese Garden, which is where Puvungna is located. In terms of additional parking we’re looking over near the Japanese Garden, Co...noley said at the time. That’s still in the environmental investigation, so it’s not a done deal, but we’d like to add another 500 spots over there. [The spots] would be used only during those first eight weeks and then we’ll leave it alone. Read more under news at Daily49er.com. Iman Palm Anna Christensen https://bit.ly/3r0FJMC

Long Beach State’s population is made up of 72% students of color but less than 40% faculty of color. Administrative initiatives look to hire more faculty of color. Sometimes faculty of color are sought out by students of color to do additional work, John Hamilton, assistant vice president of university access and retention, said. The student doesn’t know it’s additional work, they just know that ‘I see a Black face that looks like me. And maybe that is someone I can talk ...to about what’s going on. Maybe there’s someone I can do some research with. Maybe that’s someone that can be a mentor.’ To read more on the experiences faculty of color face within the university, visit news at Daily49er. Campus officials confirmed that Long Beach State will be moving forward with its regularly scheduled spring break despite concerns that it would take an alternative approach in line with other universities across the country. The Beach’s spring recess is set to occur from Monday, March 29 to Friday, April 2, according to the university’s 2020-21 academic calendar. Juliet Hidalgo, senior communications strategist for the Department of Academic Affairs, said that this decision ...is dependent on the state of the coronavirus, though, and must be in accordance with health mandates. The provost said there has been no change to spring break, Hidalgo said. This is subject to public health directives. Read more under news at Daily49er.com. Men’s and women’s basketball moves to indoor practice. After receiving approval from the Orange County Public Health Department, the Beach’s basketball program is once again back to practicing indoors. So we will be practicing at the gym Monday through Friday. We have two time slots, both teams are in there, Fee said. The men are practicing in the morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. And then the women go from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., so we have a four hour block split between the two... teams. After 40 years of serving the community, Associated Students, Inc.’s Recycling Center has closed. According to Holli Fajack, CSULB’s sustainability coordinator, the recycling center is not closed entirely and has instead been taken over by the sustainability department under Beach Services. Getting the news of the closure was just heart wrenching because the recycling center has been there for 40 years, Nick Beller said. Just knowing that it was going to close down, [that]... we were going to be the last generation to work there, is just honestly terrible. Faculty at Long Beach State have expressed mixed feelings toward a virtual fall semester, with some professors finding upsides to teaching via Zoom and others longing for things to return to the way they were. I miss random encounters with colleagues and students in hallways that lead to really interesting conversations, Andrew Jenks, an associate history professor said. I miss popping into colleagues’ rooms to discuss teaching, research or writing issues. I miss clearing ...my head by walking across campus in between classes. On Nov. 9, poet, professor and writer, Deborah Miranda discussed 15 ways to decolonize California’s mission history, in which Spanish missionaries during colonial times built upon native lands and forcefully converted Indigenous peoples to Catholicism. Miranda spoke at CSULB’s Native American Heritage Month Celebration’s virtual events to discuss how Indigenous people can decolonize California’s history with missions. We decolonize by taking care of our indigenous selves, ...our physical health, our mental health, our financial health and the health of our relationships with the people we love and with our communities. Electronic music DJ Chad Dominic Sahilan, also known as echod, witnessed first-hand the drastic changes that occurred within the scene of live music as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The setting of flashing lights and cheers of a crowd, dancing the night away all were interrupted. The Long Beach State alumni’s interest in DJing sparked in 2016 when Sahilan began to attend electronic dance music festivals. This led him to apply for a DJ internship program in 2017 offere...d by 22 West Radio. From an artist standpoint, a lot of DJs are used to performing live in venues and touring, Sahilan said. They had to adapt to the new live streaming era of the pandemic. To read more on Sahilan’s rise to becoming a DJ visit Arts & Life at the Daily49er.com. Oscar Valencia writes about the misconceptions about hiring from a UC versus a CSU, emphasizing experience rather than reputation of a school. Deshonay Dozier, a geography professor at Long Beach State, presented at the Geography Colloquium Series on Nov. 4 to discuss her research, which includes how a growing Indigenous community in Los Angeles reduced policing and led activism efforts in the 1960s. Sundance brought to light that what could be considered a disability issue, addiction, should not be at the hands of the police, nor should people who experience alcoholism be treated with such punitive measures, Dozi...er said. A group of around 50 local activists gathered in front of Long Beach City Hall to call for unity and action in the wake of the ongoing election. The most important thing is that we have to get involved, get organized on the local level, organize around the local issues that are affecting you on a daily basis and address those issues, Jedi Jimenez said. Because at the end of the day, these presidents, they’re only going to worry about their own interests, and it’s been like... that for generations.
