CONGRATULATIONS! ABTL TRIAL TEAM CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to #CaliforniaWestern’s Trial Team competitors who made it to the finals and took 1st place! The team competed last week and went up against the top schools of the region. Congratulations to Alec Rogers (3L), Colby Joseph (2L), Krista Walker (3L), and Swapna Vettiyil (2L), as well as their dedicated coaches Charlotte Najar and Ashley Sanchez! Well done team!... CONGRATULATIONS! TOMAS TANG APPELLATE BEST BRIEF! Congratulations to #CaliforniaWestern’s Appellate team who competed last week and won best brief! Their brief was scored up against the top schools in California and came out on top! Huge shoutout to Danica Hernandez and Nathan Chisholm for their hard work over these past two months. Also, a huge shout out to their coaches Sahar Karimi and Caitlin Van Voorst who led them, taught them, and supported them throughout the competition.

Please welcome our recent addition to the CIP Board, Yael Rakib! After graduating cum laude from California Western School of Law, Yael worked in juvenile depen...dency representing parents accused of abuse and neglect. At this job she was exposed to the bad science behind the shaken baby syndrome hypothesis and saw it used to remove custodial rights from innocent parents. Working in this area was difficult; however, she was grateful for the rewards of such meaningful work. #CaliforniaWestern President and Dean Sean Scott is quoted in an article by Stephanie Francis Ward on why law schools have few if any Black tenured professors, recently published in the #ABAJournal online. The expense in obtaining credentials beyond the law degree is a deterrent for people of color, as we have larger debt burdens when we graduate undergraduate and law school, Scott told the ABA Journal. #CaliforniaWestern’s Competitive Advocacy Program (CAP) teams have enjoyed some early successes in national competitions this trimester, beating out teams from UC Hastings, Chapman, UC Berkeley, Pepperdine, and Georgetown.
