ICYMI - A new report "Still Getting There" highlights significant progress California Community Colleges have made implementing AB 705 reforms, including doubling student completion of transferable, college-level English and math in the first year of full implementation. But it points to the need for further changes to ensure that uneven implementation does not continue to drive inequitable outcomes for Black and Latinx students. Research by the UC Davis School of Education identifies positive gains for students in both opportunity and efficiency of the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT). However, access to the ADT remains uneven by campus and by field of study. Many students face limited offerings depending on the campus they attend. (See the full report below)

Tranquillity High School offers a dual enrollment program that allows students to work toward both their high school diploma and an associate degree from West Hills College Coalinga at the same time. The program is more than enrolling students in college classes, it is providing exposure and a support system for students who are mostly first-generation college students.

Nearly two months into the school year, hundreds of thousands of California students are still without internet access at home needed to connect to teachers and peers during distance learning. Promises to remedy the situation in two months, or two years, are not reasonable, said Angela Stegall, president of the Marysville Unified Teachers Association in Yuba County. EdSource

On behalf of the CVHEC Board of Directors, we extend a hearty congratulations to one of our board members, Dr. Joseph I. Castro, president of Fresno State, on his appointment yesterday as chancellor-select of the California State University 23-campus system. We will miss Joe on our board, but we are heartened that a great ally will be just a little further south in Long Beach as we continue to work together to serve our students with the three CSU campuses in the Central Valley: CSU Bakersfield, Fresno State and Stanislaus State.

Congratulations Dr. Castro on your appointment as the next California State University chancellor!

A new report, Crossing Signals: What College Websites Tell Students About Taking Mathematics, by Pamela Burdman and Rogéair D. Purnell analyzed 17 CCC's and 5 CSU's websites to better understand how students learn about math pathways. The report identifies how some websites misdirect students toward remedial math classes and highlights how others are limiting access to remedial courses, and providing visual guides to available options. It also includes a checklist to assist colleges and universities in strengthening math-related guidance on their websites.
