The Fall Classic is here and our Los Angeles Dodgers are facing the Tampa Bay Rays! We couldn't pass up the opportunity to place a wager with our friends and colleges at the Tampa Bay AAZK Chapter. If the Rays win, we will make a donation to the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota FL. or...WHEN the Dodgers win, TB AAZK will make a donation to our own local Gibbon Conservation Center in Santa Clarita, CA! We look forward to a great series between two great teams and encourage you to check out both of these wonderful organizations and make a donation yourself if you are able. #gododgers

This year in the Congo, we will be celebrating World Okapi Day over the radio waves. Stations all around the Reserve will be broadcasting messaging on okapi, pr...otecting the forest, the connection of the environment to human health, and different ways people can protect the forest for okapi and communities for generations to come! Happy #NationalZooKeeperWeek! During our closure, #LAZoo keepers and other staff have worked hard not only to care for our animals and facilities, but also to c...apture many of the incredible photos and videos that we've been sharing with all of you. Thanks to our keepers, we've been able to continue to show unique views of the work they do every day to keep our animals happy and healthy. This week, look for *even more* keeper stories and POVs. It's National Zoo Keeper Week! This photo of our chapter, taken in February, was intended to help promote the 2020 AAZK National Conference that we had been selected to host. The conference has been postponed until 2021. This was the last time that we met as a group in person. Since this moment, we have been practicing physical distancing. We still come to work everyday and provide the highest quality care to our animals, seeing each other only in passing, at a distance, with... masks covering our faces. Meetings have been taking place in front of computers or on our phones. Several planned fundraisers for our chapter, our conference, and for wildlife conservation have been cancelled. We all look forward to the day where we can once again talk to large groups about the animals that we care for so passionately. We look forward to seeing you at our fundraisers when we can all eat, drink, laugh, and bowl together. We also look forward to hosting zoo keepers from all over the country at the 2021 AAZK National Conference. Until then, we would appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts if you could help support to us with a donation and by sharing this fundraiser. See more

Two of the birds sighted were hatched at the L.A. Zoo; the female (#866) was one of the "Anyapa twins"the first chicks raised using the "double-brood" protocol where two chicks are raised simultaneously by parents. Great news!

Thanks to everyone who came to Laughs for Giraffes and to all the people who stuck their necks out for Giraffe this past weekend!

Los Angeles American Association of Zoo Keepers Chapter 11.07.2020

Today is #worldgiraffeday With only approximately 111,000 giraffe remaining in the wild, giraffe were listed as Vulnerable to Extinction on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. Giraffe numbers in Africa have plummeted by a staggering 30% over the last 30 years alone, and likely more than 90% in the last century. This silent extinction is happening before our eyes, but we can still turn this around if we start acting now! This day was created to raise attention and... knowledge about giraffes. LA/AAZK is hosting an online comedy show tonight, thanks to @nowherecomedy All proceeds raised from this event will support the @giraffe_conservation foundation. Ticket link is in bio. By LA/AAZK President Mike Bona in the Namib dessert in North West Namibia. This giraffe just had a GPS tracker placed on his ossicone. The information obtained from the GPS unit will provide valuable data to GCF that will help protect these magnificent animals from going extinct. #aazk #conservation #giraffe #giraffes #stickyourneckout #laughsforgiraffes #comedy
