Gratitude to Xochitl in Cuicatl and Grupo Teokalli for your prayers, culture, and perspective. Big love to the next generation of leaders who came through. We see your pain and honor your leadership. Our community is feeling the pain and stress from the pandemic and economic crisis. The violence that has erupted needs healing in a cultural way. We need real healing to the harm that was caused and real solutions, not incarceration. Housing, jobs, healthcare, education, and healing are the solutions not police. In California's overcrowded prisons, inadequate conditions and unnecessary transfers have exacerbated COVID-19 infections; the infection rate is seven times that of California's general population and twice as deadly. Since the start of the pandemic, 197 incarcerated people have died from COVID-19. Public health experts are calling on the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to reduce its current prison population by at least half.
