Today would’ve been the 99th birthday of my father Arturo Chico O’Farrill. This short Cuban immigrant of Irish/German descent who composed The Afro Cuban Jaz...z Suite, The Aztec Suite, Orro Incienso y Mirra, the Three Afro Cuban Jazz Moods and countless other miraculous works of art has been slept on by most journalists, historians and documentarians (with the notable exception of Ira Gitler). But musicians knew. They always know. His music has been adored and performed by the likes of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Wynton Marsalis, Art Farmer, Count Basie, in fact a chunk of the history of jazz was formed in Chico’s mind and spilled out on to manuscript paper. I love you papa and not a day goes by that I am not grateful for your art, your example and your gentleness. Maybe one day the story tellers will catch up to the story we all know!
