Class Spotlight Are you curious what HDEV 417 is about? Dozens of popular books offer suggestions, advice, and recipes for how people can stay young as they age. Researchers from different disciplinary perspectives have developed their own definitions of successful aging, and community organizations and policy-makers have created programs, policies and infrastructure to support their own visions of what it means to age well. Dr. Emily Shryer uses an interdisciplinary fra...mework to critically evaluate both popular press perceptions and social science theories of successful aging from different disciplinary perspectives. Students will examine how historical period, gender, class and culture shape people’s perceptions, expectations, and experiences of growing old. Topics covered in this class will include subjects such as longevity, quality of life, and lessons learned from centenarians, anti-aging myths and evidence, cross-cultural perspectives on successful aging, and age-friendly communities and infrastructure. One of the assignments of the course involves a project in which students research and assess the effectiveness of a community-based resource, program, or infrastructure from the perspective of successful aging. If you’re interested in learning more, take HDEV 417 with Dr. Emily Shryer in Spring 2021! #classspotlight #humandevelopment #successfulaging #socialsciencetheory #csulbclasses

Stephanie Pantoja’s commitment to and perseverance in engaging in research, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, have truly been impressive. Stephanie joined Dr. Kelly’s CLIaM research lab in the beginning of Fall 2020 and is a member of the inaugural cohort of Student Data Fellows. Within the first six weeks, Stephanie has already shown substantial contributions. She created tables for conference abstract submissions, completed independent training in Qualtrics survey de...sign, and contributed items to a survey of High-Impact Practices that will be distributed to CSULB students. Her ability to work independently toward team goals and her being reliable, consistent, and supportive of her lab-mates set her apart. Stephanie is interested in presenting research at scholarly conferences and hopes to pursue graduate school after she graduates from CSULB. See more

John Bowlby was a British psychologist, notable for his interest in child development. His work pioneers the evolutionary theory of attachment which describes how children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments with others, because this will help them survive in the world. Bowlby suggested that a child would initially form only one attachment and that the attachment figure acted as a secure base for exploring the world.#hdev #hdevtheorist #johnbowlb #fridaymotivation #bowlb #csulb
