The volcano’s activity has helped to shape much of Northern California, including the Tuscan Formation. Mt. Yana sees a lot of snow in the colder months, but is open for hiking as early as the spring!

This last Friday, Russell Shapiro, one of our paleontologists, made virtual learning fun for a class of 3rd graders at University Preparation Charter School. The students had been studying a whale fossil he found previously in the Simi Valley and he zoomed them from his current dig site. He showed them how to tell the difference between a rock and bone (Yes! The tongue test!) and he showed them a finger bone that came from a prehistoric animal, possibly a camel! The students ...were very interactive, asking him all sorts of questions about paleontology and his work. He gave them a excellent learning experience and has been the highlight of the students virtual learning this year. The teacher is in the middle of setting up a second meeting! Hopefully, this is something we can do more in the future, possibly even beyond when virtual learning ends. This truly brought science to life in an excellent interactive way. See more
