Speech-Language Pathologists also work on social skills with people on the Autism Spectrum. It is important to know that people on the Autism Spectrum, and othe...rs with less obvious communication impairments, do not always understand or follow directions (receptive language), may make unsafe decisions (memory and cognition), may shy away from other people or say and do socially odd things (pragmatic language), and may have trouble explaining themselves or what they have seen (expressive language). Some communication impairments are obvious and others are much more subtle. These issues affect people in different ways, with some needing the support of group homes and caretakers and others leading fully independent lives working as educators, doctors, and CEOs. Be aware that communication difficulties can occur with members of any community and be cognizant of this when interacting with people from all walks of life. (This therapist was shot while caring for a patient with Autism).

I think our Bright Star SLPs can relate! One does not simply "major" in speech pathology, one lives, breathes, and devotes their life to the study of speech pathology. Always learning, always researching!

I love this blog Playing with Words. She has some great info about the precursors to language such as joint attention/eye contact, pointing, etc. Here is what she says: If you have a child with a speech and language delay, you want so much for your child to TALK. Of course you do! You want your child to talk just like the other children his age and the fact he isn’t makes your heart ache. And you will do anything you can to help him. But with a child with a speech delay, part...icularly with toddlers, the first step to getting your child to talk, often times has nothing to do with speech. Rather, we will want to first look at how your child IS communicating with you, and then expand and mold that communication into speech. Some information on communication beyond speech... http://www.playingwithwords365.com//02/what-is-communicat/

Talking Tip to parents: Always talk to you kids while you are in the car or cooking. Modeling language is just as important as eliciting language. For example, I am cooking, I like balloons, Let's play, etc. Talk, have fun, and play with your kids. Playing is also important to fostering language.
