Well, that was inevitable. Calls to remove statues of Augustus and Marcus Aurelius. It's true that they were both imperialist tyrants (in the classical Greek sense of the word tyrannos = "sole ruler") and massive slave holders... https://blognonian.com//all-roads-lead-to-removal-replaci/
Spain-based journalist Giles Tremblett shares his take on the post-Spanish Civil War careers of International Brigades veterans, not all of which were praiseworthy. #InternationalBrigades https://www.theguardian.com//the-contested-legacy-of-the-a
It's not exactly history ... or rather, it represents billions of years of history ... and it takes thousands of years for the light of some of these starts to reach us, so that means that you're actually looking back in time. https://www.syfy.com/syf/what-do-10-million-stars-look-like
More interesting news from COPH (the Center for Oral and Public History).
Did you know that October 26th is National Day of the Deployed? I certainly didn't until today.
Some local history... very old local history.
More fun from PAT (Phi Alpha Theta)
To all of you out there struggling with winds, fire, evacuations, and awful air quality ... stay safe! https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/
We missed St Crispin's Day! (October 25th) Better late than never... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x26GN6rQbZI
This is seriously cool.
The message from Dr Brown-Coronel reminded me of the Battle of Coronel, November 1st 1914. The German East Asian Squadron engaged and defeated a British force off the coast of Chile. The Germans were on an epic voyage to try to get home from China where they had been stationed prior to the outbreak of war. They never made it. British forces intercepted them in the south Atlantic, and got their revenge for the defeat at Coronel. https://www.britishbattles.com/first-wor/battle-of-coronel/
Ray Ortiz, one of CSUF History's own, features in the following event. (Hat-tip to Dr Volker Janssen for bringing this to our attention.) Ray himself has this to say: "Greetings all! In recognizing #lgbtqia History Month, I will be speaking on a panel on Cal State Fullerton's Titan Table Talk. The discussion will be LGBTQ+ History of Civic Engagement, Social Justice, and Advocacy. I invite you all to join in attendance." Check it out!
