CSRC participates on research on health disparities CSRC Associate Director Guadalupe X. "Suchi" Ayala is leading this effort along with Director Jose Castillo, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) DHHS Nat Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The $2,000,000 grant from NIH is a portion of a proposed total 10 million 5-Year Endowment Strategic Plan funded for `Building Capacity and Infrastructure for Population Health and Health Disparities Research a...t San Diego State University' (SDSU). The grant renewal was submitted as an interdisciplinary team including engineering professor Keen Moon and SDSU president Adela de la Torre. The mission of the Strategic Plan is to create an infrastructure for innovative and significant translational research to achieve population-level health changes and reduce health disparities among racially/ethnically diverse populations (Hispanic/ Latino and immigrant groups most notably), sexual minorities, and lower-income populations in the United States (US). #sdsu #grant #populationhealth #computationalscience #engineering #research #NIH #health See more

CSRC DATA SCIENCE WORKSHOP, May 28-30, 2019 Data science continues to evolve as one of the most promising and in-demand fields sought by industry and national labs. On 2018, CSRC started offering a MS degree with emphasis in data science. A three day workshop on data science was offered to students, including short lectures and a lab. The workshop covered an introduction to data science, statistical and machine learning, with an emphasis on two supervised learning algorithm m...ethods: Random forests and neural networks. The students (see photo) were glad to participate in this opportunity to cover a lot of information in the data science field in only three sessions. For more information on the workshop, on-line certificates and PhD degree program in Computational Science (offered jointly with UC Irvine), please contact the Computational Research Center at: [email protected] See more

Textures (that feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance) are highly variable, which makes them very difficult to define in a mathematical model. A new paper by CSRC associated faculty Jerome Gilles may shed some light on the analysis of textures in images with many possible applications. CSRC Associate Director and SDSU Professor Guadalupe X. "Suchi" Ayala (Health Promotion and Behavioral Science) just published the results of an interesting clinical trial investigating family intervention effects on children's dietary intake. The study analysis dietary intake and tracks whether changes in mothers' dietary intake, her parenting strategies, and behavioral strategies promote more healthy eating at home. CSRC is involved in the development of computational solutions to assess these and other types of interventions.
