Nicholas Olveda is a first-generation college graduate that recently earned his degree in Biochemistry. His drive stems from the loss of his younger cousin from a rare type of cancer. When he began his journey at Fresno State his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He has used the tragedies in his life to fuel his motivation and focus on his goals. His career goal is to work in cancer research and positively impact the field by finding new ways to treat and diag...nose cancer. Nicholas leads by example, during his time at Fresno State he participated in numerous programs and organizations including Emory's Laney Graduate School Summer Opportunity for Academic Research (LGS-SOAR), Tri-Beta Biological Society, Chemistry Club, Fresno State CSU-Lsamp , RISE, and SACNAS. He was awarded the Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) fellowship. He has a deep desire to educate underserved minority students to pursue higher academic achievement and provide them with the resources to become successful. In Fresno State Chemistry Club he does outreach with elementary school students to expose them to STEM. He attributes one of his best experiences to working in Dr. Chen's lab to research flavonoid synthesis as potential cancer therapeutic. The research he worked on sheds light on possible therapeutic treatment in metastasis LNCaP prostate cancer cells. Nicholas adds, "My time here has provided endless opportunities to engage in research at the undergraduate level as well as providing a bridge to pursuing graduate research opportunities." Although he lost his job due to COVID-19 he sought after new opportunities and was hired at E.&J. Gallo Winery as a seasonal lab technician. He is currently working on applications to Ph.D. and Master's programs. #BullDogStrong #FresnoState #BioChemistry

Souvie Somsacksy, is a Fresno State biology major. She is a first-generation college student that immigrated from Laos as a child. Her goal is to pursue and MD/PhD. For the past 4-years she has worked as a scribe at the Saint Agnes Medical Center. In the summer she finished a COVID-19 convalescent plasma research internship with Mayo Clinic. She is involved in Fresno State HCOP, RISE, NIH RISE Cohort, and an ambassador for the Laotian American Community of Fresno (LACF). Thr...ough COVID-19 she has continued her research in Dr. Jason Bush's lab. "I am currently conducting follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer (FVPTC)," she explains. " In the most basic sense, I am looking for patterns of mutations in cancer genes among thyroid cancer tissue from a sample of 20 Central Valley deceased patients. My hope is that we will be able to identify mutation patterns in DNA that will help in the early detection of FVPTC." In her free time she uses her small business, Fresno Aroids, as a platform to educate people on the science behind caring for different species of plants as well as discussing topics of ethical plant sourcing. She is a strong advocate for minority communities and encourages students to pursue a degree in STEM. #BulldogStrong #FresnoState

Ayanna Alewine is in her final year at Fresno State and is majoring in Environmental Earth Science. Currently, she is doing research for her undergraduate thesis. "I have taken samples at the campus Auger Farm and will be running them through an XRF device to identify the compositional makeup of the soil," Ayanna explains, " I seek to understand the shifts in composition and weathering rates in this area and discover ways to mitigate elemental losses critical to agricultur...al yield." She is a proud first-generation college student that participates in the OBSS (Official Black Student Success) program. She encourages students to pursue a degree in STEM, "Pursuing any degree in STEM will be a challenging road, however the contributions and advancements that you make during and after your degree journey will sustain scientific knowledge for future generations." #godogs

The night: Saturn and Jupiter appeared closest in the night sky than they have in centuries, in an astronomical event called a conjunction. What makes this yea...r’s spectacle so rare? It’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky, and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it has for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this great conjunction.
