Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth), also known as Emancipation Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day, is a day of recognition, resto...ration, and celebration. However, it is not in fact the day that slavery was abolished. It is the day when enslaved Texans found out they had been free for over 2 years. On June 19th, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. Although it was two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Juneteenth is a symbolic date commemorating African-American freedom.
