March 11, 2021 will mark 10 years since the tsunami that not only affected Crescent City but also our sister city Rikuzentakata, Japan. The first panel discussion, on March 7th, will be Sister City Relationships. Using the example of the sister city relationship between Rikuzentakata, in Iwate Prefecture, and Crescent City, in California, which began after the earthquake, the participants will talk about how sister city relationships can expand into business, education and ...other areas of exchange. This panel discussion will be held after our screening of episodes from the 113 Project. Register here: https://watch.eventive.org/ff311//6009db28c39487004ed07285 #UnshakableFriendship #FF311

Local government first responders in Del Norte County had their first opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine January 4th. Firefighters from Crescent City F...ire & Rescue, Gasquet Volunteer Fire Department, and Crescent City Police Department who opted to take the vaccine received their first vaccination of the two-shot series Monday evening. Our local volunteer firefighters and police officers are often the first ones on scene of emergency situations where members of our community may be ill or having a medical emergency, Fire Chief Bill Gillespie said. The opportunity to receive the vaccination was made possible through the coordination and assistance of Del Norte County Public Health. Each time vaccinations are given, Public Health must obtain the vaccine doses, process screening information from each recipient, and make sure the vaccination records are entered into the California Immunization Registry. Vaccine recipients must also be observed following their shot to watch for any reaction to the vaccine. Cal-Ore Life Flight assisted by providing flight nurses who administered the vaccine, as well as an advanced Life Support ambulance to be on standby to monitor for any adverse or allergic reactions; there were none. Most who received the vaccination reported a sore shoulder and a few had mild fatigue the following day, but no other issues were noted. Gillespie was glad that the COVID-19 vaccine is being offered to local first responders. Having the opportunity for our firefighters and police officers who wanted to receive the COVID-19 vaccine helps us better serve our community by helping keep our people healthy. Our community is reminded to continue to use your mask, practice social distancing, sanitize surfaces and spaces, and wash your hands regularly.

Graphic courtesy of United Health Services. Please consider who you have been in contact with during the holidays, take time to check any symptoms you may hav...e and ask questions. Stay home until you have the answers that you need, quarantine and try to be safe. For best results it is recommended to wait 5-7 days after exposure to get a free test. TESTS ARE FREE. Be safe. Together in Del Norte we can get through this and get our school and businesses open.

Thank you CCPD! Emergency Child Identification Kits: The Crescent City Police Department has 100 Child Identification Kits that will assist parents in maintaining emergency information about their children in case of emergency, or if their children go missing. During these incidents parents are normally distraught and sometimes unable to provide information about their children to law enforcement that may aid in us being able to quickly locate the child. These identificati...on kits are filled out and maintained by the parents and would not be retained at the Police Department. The kits also include a small information card that can be filled out and kept in your child's backpack or pocket for day trips in case they get separated from you. The kits include DNA swabs and fingerprinting that can be very helpful in long term missing persons cases. Again, these will not be maintained by the Police Department. If you would like to receive one of these kits please comment below or send a private message to us. Please share the post so that we can distribute these kits out to people and hopefully help them in an emergency situation. Chief Griffin

From Fire Chief Bill Gillespie: November 4, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE... Subject: Multi-agency Rescue Effort Removes Injured Teenager from Ocean and Reef After Falling from Rock in Crescent City Contact: Bill Gillespie, Fire Chief On the evening of Wednesday, November 4th at 4:47 PM, units from Crescent City Fire & Rescue and Del Norte Ambulance were dispatched to the beach area off the west end of 3rd Street in Crescent City for a teenaged male who had fallen from a rock, and was in the water. Officers from the Crescent City Police Department and a CALFIRE engine from Crescent City also responded. While responding dispatch advised that bystanders were trying to keep the teen’s head above water. An officer From Crescent City Police Department was first on scene and located the victim at the far west end of a reef off the end if 4th Street. The officer was able to keep the victim’s head above water while additional fire and ambulance responders accessed the reef location. The victim had fallen from a rock from a height of approximately 20-30’ into the rock debris below and sustained major injuries. After removing the victim from the water and securing him to a rescue board, multiple rescuers transported the victim across the reef through a tangle of large rocks to the edge of the sand. The victim on the board was placed onto an all-terrain utility vehicle from the police department and transported across the beach to a location below the end of 4th Street. The victim was then placed into a rescue basket and vertical lifted by ladder truck from the beach to the roadway level where the patient was transferred to Del Norte Ambulance and transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in serious condition. The four agencies involved worked very well together in the challenging rescue effort to get the victim from the ocean, across rough terrain to the roadway where the victim could be transported to the hospital said Fire Chief Bill Gillespie. During the course of this rescue, Crescent City Fire & Rescue also responded to two additional calls for service. The all-terrain side by side utility vehicle is brand new to Crescent City Police Department. It was purchased with funding from the 2019 Homeland Security Grant Program from CAL-OES and administered through Del Norte County Office of Emergency Services. This was the first use of the vehicle in a response capability. The ATV just paid for itself in its first response. This is one of many uses that show the capability of the new unit, said Police Chief Richard Griffin. Crescent City Fire & Rescue would like to remind residents and visitors to be careful around the rocks and reefs found along our coast. They are often slick, and slips and falls can occur quickly, sometimes leading to very serious injuries or death. Their often-remote locations lead to challenging rescues. # # #

Hi Community, Please see below for the Monday (12/7) Update on where our region stands with the ICU availability that triggers the Regional Stay at Home Order. Our regional availability increased over the weekend and we were not put on the list for closures today. Please consider that Del Norte County is still in the highest tier or restrictions due to our high numbers of local COVID-19 positive tests. Please help us slow the spread!
