Great case with fun imaging! - classic peroneus tertius tear. Watch the horse’s gait carefully. Notice how the left hind limb appears to drag. Subtle but ther...e. The peroneus tertius AKA tertius fibularis is a tendon that is part of the reciprocal apparatus of the hind limb - ensures that the hock and stifle flex simultaneously. When significantly injured, the hock can be extended while the stifle is in flexion, as shown in the second photo. This typically causes a more mechanical lameness than one induced by pain. A wound was noticed on the front of the crus so radiographs were obtained to make sure that no injury to bone/osseus structures had occurred. Soft tissue swelling can be seen at the site of rupture. Ultrasound revealed severe disruption of the tendon just above the hock. Watch the ultrasound video as the tendon transforms from a well defined bright spindle shape to a dark and disorganized circular shape. Check out the overlay of the anatomy drawing and the radiograph to better understand the anatomy!! #equinelameness #equinesportsmedicine #peroneustertiusrupture #sonosite #equineultrasound See more
Today’s fun case - avulsion fracture of the lateral proximal sesamoid bone! Can you see the abnormality of the bone and suspensory ligament branch in the following ultrasound images? #equinelameness #equinesportsmedicine #equinevet #ultrasound #equineultrasound #sonosite
Always important to take orthogonal views. This one was lucky. Leave the screw/nail in place until your vet can X-ray
Very interesting forelimb proximal suspensory case. Initial radiographic and ultrasonographic examination found significant abnormalities of both ligament and b...one attachment site. Nuclear scintigraphy and MRI were performed shortly after to help elucidate soft tissue and bone involvement - both were quite active and problematic. Check out the overlaid images of the different modalities! The image of the non-weight bearing ultrasound over the MRI shows how detailed ultrasound can really be. #equinelameness #equineultrasound #sonositemturbo #sonosite #proximalsuspensorydesmitis #enthesiopathy See more
