From today through October 30, ENV is participating in Bronco Launchpad, Cal Poly Pomona's crowdfunding campaign for new programs and initiatives. The college is crowdfunding for the ENV Emergency Assistance Program, established in Spring 2020 to help students facing unexpected hardships due to COVID-19. Thanks to the generosity of the ENV community, the program awarded one-time $500 emergency grants to nearly 40 ENV students last semester. But we know that there are many others who are still in need. There are two ways to help us help them: by donating or by simply helping us spread the word by sharing the crowdfunding link https://crowdfund.cpp.edu/project/22418. Donations are tax-deductible.

If it’s not a matter of if, but when. All of California’s wild landscapes will burn. It’s in their nature. Cal Poly Pomona has kept students safe from wildfires for decades, despite inhabiting an area designated as a High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. But the last several years have been anything like the past. In response to the changing conditions, Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies lecturer Douglas Kent ('10, master's in landscape architecture; '06, master's in regenerative... studies) has been contracted by the university to provide a wildfire-readiness assessment for the campus. Kent has spent weeks examining campus structures, defensible space, roads, and outlying areas. This week, he and Anna Cook ('20, master's in regenerative studies; '18, gender, ethnic and multicultural studies) were on campus to continue assessment. Kent has a long history with fire. His work began in 1991 and after the Tunnel Fire. Since then he has written "Firescaping," a best-selling book on landscaping for fire protection, and has worked throughout the state sharing his expertise.

Earlier this week, MLA student Dani Slabaugh defended her thesis...and released its graphic novel adaptations in English and Spanish. Both can be downloaded for free on her Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=33715360) "Most thesis research is never read, and I wanted to be sure that my work was understandable to the general public," Slabaugh said. "In particular I wanted to be sure that it was accessible to the community members I worked with to produce this research, many of whom are monolingual Spanish speakers."
