Meet our team at the APISC! For those of you who are new to campus, we wanted to introduce our amazing Coordinator at the APISC Kayla Kosaki!!! Kayla Kosaki (she/her): ... "I was born and raised on the Big Island in Hilo, Hawai’i and I’m proud to be a queer fourth-generation Japanese Okinawan (yonsei uchinanchu) educator and artist." Word/phrase that resonates with Kayla: Nothing without us, about us, is for us. - South African Disability Rights and Youth Activists. Growing up in small town Hawai'i, I witnessed a lot of white saviorism--folx coming in from outside saying they knew better than our community and needed to change our ways without fully understanding historical context, let alone our community and culture. In our efforts toward justice, we can often have good intentions but still harm communities if we're not mindful of the wisdom and knowledge already present. This phrase reminds me to center the voices and people affected by injustices in creating solutions for a better world. [Alt. Second picture is a baby picture of Kayla with her name and pronouns.]
