The effects of sex trafficking on the brain, heart and spirit of a young girl are severe, long-lasting and incredibly traumatic. It is a harsh reality that every Courage House resident faces. We are so blessed to have a longtime friend and advisor of Courage Worldwide, Dr. Benjamin Keyes, as a mental health advisor over the years. Since the inception of Courage Worldwide, Dr. Keyes has helped us form a trauma-informed program. Just last week, Dr. Keyes paid a visit to Courage... House Tanzania to hold a week-long intensive training with our staff here! Our social workers, executive team and support staff participated in comprehensive daily trainings so that each of us will be even more equipped to provide the best care for each girl at Courage House, as she walks through her trauma in the healing process. It was intense, but We also had fun! Dr. Keyes shared some of his counseling techniques with our team, and we had some fun learning and practicing!

"Sio katika nchi yangu." Not in my country. On the walls of our office in Courage House Tanzania is this beautiful artwork reminding us of the greater vision of Courage Worldwide - to eliminate the crime of sex trafficking in every country and serve its vulnerable victims. ... In order to do this, true partnership and collaboration is required. All of us must join together to declare that trafficking has no place in our cities, our states and our nations. Courage Worldwide is honored to be a part of a global effort, collaboration and campaign adding our voices to the cry Not in My Country. See more

New beginnings at Courage House Tanzania!

We first heard the story of "Haley" when she was 15 years old. She is a cousin to one of our girls at Courage House, who begged us to also give her cousin a chance to change her life, like she has gotten at Courage House. Our team went through all the protocols and investigated the situation of Haley. Her mother was single and in extreme poverty, barely able to make ends meet. Haley was on the streets to survive. Her mother came with Haley to meet our team of social workers. ...It was then that Haley's mother decided to disclose the devastating news that she has AIDS. Haley took the news very hard, as any young daughter would. Haley's mom said to her, Now you have a chance for your life to change it so you don't turn out like me... I won't live long, but you can have hope for your future now. Haley sobbed and our team was overcome and tears streamed down their faces too. She came to Courage House heavy hearted, but with a glimmer of hope. Her cousin greeted her and they both cried in each other's arms. Soon, Haley settled in and was shining. She loves to dance, to rap and has such a fun sense of humor that often girls were laughing when she was with them! Haley's story is one of hope. Since coming to Courage, she received the highest grades on National Exams of all the Courage girls, advocated for her sister to attend a nearby school, and has successfully transitioned to Courage House Too. She is soaking up all the new skills and is excited to start college in the fall! We are so proud of Haley and how she is already changing the world!

Here's a peak at a Courage House counseling session! Counseling is an extremely important part of the Courage House program. Victims of sexual exploitation and sex trafficking face extreme trauma that we address through counseling and other therapeutic activities, like music and art. ... Our counseling staff receives specialized trauma therapy training so that the girls' psychological and emotional needs are addressed in the best way. As our first Courage House girl once said, "Healing is the most painful thing I've ever done. But it's also the most joyful thing I've ever done."
