Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue 31.10.2020

Last week Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to a brush fire in Talbert Park. The fire began in an area with dense brush located at the end of 19th St. and Balboa Blvd., in an area of County owned land. Through coordinated efforts and the use of hose lines and tools, crews of Engine 83 and Engine 84 extinguished the fire quickly. City park rangers and a County of Orange representative were on scene to assist CMFR with investigation into the cause of the fire.... The fire is under investigation and there were no injuries. Earlier today, Nov. 2, 2020 Mesa Engine 85 (ME85) responded to a request for a public assist at 400 Merrimac Way (Coast Apartments). When crews arrived, they encountered a kitten that was stuck in hole of a concrete water feature. ME85 crew Captain Taylor Voss, Engineer Pete Melgoza and Firefighter/Paramedics Jeff Bibler and Zach Finklestein were able to break apart 1-2 square feet of concrete with hand tools and retrieve the scared kitten.... The kitten was a stray, but was adopted by a resident of the Coast Apartments soon after being rescued. Respect Integrity Compassion

Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedics Zach Finkelstein and James Grovom who both officially concluded their probationary year with CMFR! In return they received the highly anticipated firefighter badge and helmet shield presented to them by Chief Stefano and the command staff. Congratulations to the newes...t CMFR firefighters and to those that have helped them reach this level of success. Respect Integrity Compassion

Remember before you go to bed tonight, Saturday Oct. 31, 2020, change your clock and check your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors! Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue reminds everyone, when you fall back one hour this weekend, don’t just change your clock. Make sure to check your smoke alarm and make sure your carbon monoxide detector is functioning properly. Replace any smoke alarms that are older than 10 years. A working smoke alarm on every level of your home and inside ...every bedroom can alert everyone in the house if there is a fire. A home escape plan along with some practice can make a difference in a home fire. Be fire smart and fire safe! For more information, please visit: www.costamesaca.gov Respect Integrity Compassion

We officially welcome back Battalion Chief Bill Kershaw who recently came back from his assignment on the Red Salmon Complex Fire, of the Six Rivers National Forest, east of Eureka. BC Kershaw acted in the capacity of Resource Unit Leader (RESL) and is part of the California Interagency Incident Management Team (CIIMT) which is an interagency team comprised of Federal, State and local government team members. One of only three people who can fill the role of RESL, his prima...ry responsibility was to track operational resources and prepare the Incident Action Plan (IAP) which formally documents incident goals, operational period objectives and the response strategy defined by the incident commanders. We thank BC Kershaw for his strong work on his assignment and representing Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue while deployed. Respect Integrity Compassion

We want to officially thank and welcome home Firefighter Corey Brean who recently arrived home from a two-week assignment on the Creek Fire. Firefighter Brean acted in the capacity of a Field Observer trainee (FOBS), and his role was critical to the overall planning and resource allocation of units for preparations and plans during the operational period. Planning and resource allocation is identified through the location and verification of the fires edge and control lines (...i.e. hand lines, dozer lines and retardant drops) through the use of a GPS system. Information gathered by the FOB is also used to developed maps for the firefighters to use for accurate situational awareness and safety. As a crucial component to firefighter’s safety, FOBS perform a hazard assessment on trees located through and near the burn areas. We thank Firefighter Brean for his hard work and strong representation of Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue during his assignment. Respect Integrity Compassion

We want to officially thank and welcome home Engineer Travis Johnson who recently arrived home from a two-week assignment on the August Complex Fire. Engineer Johnson acted in the capacity of a Base Camp Manager trainee, and his role was critical to the overall operations of the incident. Base Camp Managers roles often includes managing mobilization, incident activities, ensuring all firefighters are provided with essential supplies and basic elements of life needs. This is i...nclusive of clean restrooms (outhouses), laundry services, safe areas for rest and sleep and essential equipment and supplies required for both the operational and administrative side firefighting. After an incident, the Base Manager also spearheads the demobilization efforts. We thank Engineer Johnson for representing Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue so well, and doing such an outstanding job while out on his assignment. Respect Integrity Compassion
