On February 12, 1865, Henry Garnet, a former slave and now pastor of the Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., became the first African American to speak in our nation’s capitol. He was invited by President Lincoln to preach only a few days after the adoption of the 13th Amendment banning slavery. His sermon was titled, Let the Monster Perish. This section of his message gave me chills: Let us view this demon [slavery], which the people have worshipped ...as a God. Come forth, thou grim monster, that thou mayest be critically examined! There he stands. Behold him, one and all. Its work is to chattelize man; to hold property in human beings. Great God! I would as soon attempt to enslave Gabriel or Michael as to enslave a man made in the image of God, and for whom Christ died. Slavery is snatching man from the high place to which he was lifted by the hand of God, and dragging him down to the level of the brute creation, where he is made to be the companion of the horse and the fellow of the ox. [Slavery] tears the crown of glory from his head and as far as possible obliterates the image of God that is in him. Post credit: toddnighs19

Reflections Series // 10.28.20 "At 18 I had walked away from what I knew to be true. We didn’t have a college group in 2008 so I didn’t have an opportunity to keep up the facade when my church friends and I graduated. I never stopped calling myself a Christian though, my friends and I just traded bible studies for parties. It was just one performance for another. You could easily look at my life and see me as a statistic: A church kid leaving the faith after graduating. The p...arties stopped being fun when I turned 21. Keeping up the performance was exhausting. I couldn’t pretend to be happy while I knew that I was choosing the world when God had called me to so much more. I tried bringing this up to my friends and they rejected it and then they rejected me. So much of my faith was dependent on my friend's faith growing up I didn’t know what to do by myself. I called up an old high school leader who I knew was still serving from back when I was in HS. The funny thing was I honestly didn’t like him back when I was a student, but he was still serving faithfully and God was going to use him regardless. Whether he was aware of that or not he still answered the call. That night I told Mike everything. I needed to take my faith seriously and I knew that meant dealing with my sin. About a year later I was encouraged to start serving in the HS group. I resisted for about 6 months. I felt that I wasn’t worthy and that I didn’t have anything to offer these kids. I was reminded that in my own story God used the imperfect investment of my old leaders to bring me back to him years later. The biggest blessing in my life has been the mentors God has used to guide and humble me. These men of God pull no punches when I’m being a knucklehead and have no problem helping me see my own arrogance. Regardless they’ve loved me well and more importantly always point me back towards God and his word. Over the last 8 years of serving, I’ve seen hundreds of students go through the ministry. It can be discouraging when you see social media posts or hear the stories. I try not to stay there though. The harvest is still plentiful and the workers are few. I know that God is still working!" // Josh Zerhusen . . : Kimberly Glauninger
