eInspire: When first learning to drive, I struggled to maintain the car's direction. I was constantly correcting course, which made the car sway from one side of the lane to the other. My father, my very brave driving instructor, gave me some profound wisdom. The problem is you’re looking right at the very front of the car when you should be looking in the distance up the road, he instructed. Good drivers don’t look where they are, they look where they’re going. PAUL's NO...TE: What an amazing definition of leadership. Leaders are always looking at where the team needs to be going, not just where they are. The world needs leaders to look ahead. Maybe I should say the world needs healthy leaders, those willing to put in the work to lead well. There are many who desire ‘positional authority,’ but not quite as many willing to take on the weight of ‘earned authority.’ The difference? Positional authority is when a person is given a role with a title and they work it as a job. Earned authority occurs when a person carries a vision to see an organization, community or people group succeed and will be heartbroken if those goals aren’t accomplished. It’s the person looking towards the distance, not at the front-end of the car.
