Junior crew coming off the water! #zlacjuniors
San Diego is back to the Orange Tier and ZLAC is back in multi-person boats! Our athletes are enjoying sharing big boats instead of rowing in singles, as they have done for nearly a year. We are using masked/vaccinated rower protocols in accordance with USRowing rules. credit: Savonia Guy
We had a wonderful viewing of the documentary A Most Beautiful Thing, followed by a discussion with Arshay Cooper, author of the book it was based on, back in September 2020. It’s now Black History Month, and if you would like to watch (or re-watch) this fascinating story of the first all-Black high school rowing team, it’s available to stream on Amazon Prime or Peacock. It has been gaining a lot of interest in the news recently! You can also join in this panel discussion on Saturday, February 13, at 9:20 AM PST.
Thank you Allie and KUSI!
Thank you to Keara Farrel and Kerry Simmonds for representing ZLAC today on KUSI "Good Morning San Diego" with Allie Wagner! https://www.kusi.com/zlac-rowing-club-adjusts-due-to-the-p/

We're scheduled for a live TV segment tomorrow morning (1/19/21) at approximately 6:15 AM,* on Good Morning San Diego on KUSI! All us rowers will be up by then, right? If not, we'll try to post a link to the segment later so you can watch it! *All times are approximate and live news can reschedule at will. We hope it goes through!
Longtime ZLAC member Donnalee Hicks brightened up her Christmas Eve row yesterday morning with a very spirited costume. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us here at ZLAC!

All the singles ladies rocking it on this dark dark morning. #sunrise #singles #sculling #zlacmasters
ZLAC’s women have been facing challenges since 1892. This isn’t our first pandemic! We have strict social distancing and sanitation protocols in place, so our members can enjoy the water from singles. Looking backwards, pushing forwards! Gina Boccia and Keara Farrel; photo credit Maria Boccia.
Wishing all the athletes a full recovery! ZLAC is currently offering very limited rowing in single boats to members, with coaches sanitizing the boats thoroughly and bringing them in and out of the boathouse, while rowers only do bayside pickups. Thank you all for practicing safe rowing!

Rowing can be learned at any age, and is about so much more than just exercising. One of our members, Cissy Wolfe, writes: I took my first Learn to Row class almost 8 years ago. I was terrified but I have come to learn that the things that have scared me most often bring the most purpose and joy. The class happened to fall on the same day my dad passed away and this new extended family helped me navigate the grief and his memory is now inextricably linked to this sport I ...love so much. I love ZLAC, my teammates, coaches and the sport. I have had the opportunity to meet women rowers from all over the country that share this passion and I’m so grateful for the friendships I have made along this journey and these relationships have enriched my life in ways that would be hard to explain. Every year at the end of the summer, my rowing club has a Masters banquet. It gives us an opportunity to enjoy an evening together (out of spandex) and to celebrate our club’s history (the oldest women’s rowing club), our amazing coaches, coxswains and teammates. Every year I have had the privilege of making a slideshow for the event and it truly is a labor of love. We had a virtual meeting the other night to discuss planning our virtual banquet in August and as we accommodate this new reality, it makes me even more grateful for these women. The slideshow will likely look very different this year. This is the video from last year, which includes an amazing music video by the very talented Keara Farrel. I don’t need to be reminded of how special this club is, but it’s fun to look back and remain hopeful that we can all be together on the water again sometime soon. Keep your eyes on our website, zlac.org, for future learn-to-row classes!
Under California Executive Order N-33-20, all club activities are suspended, and club facilities are not available, until further notice. We encourage our members to stay in contact during this time of physical distancing, so if you're feeling lonely, pick up the phone and call a crew mate; arrange a virtual meeting with your friends; and above all, stay healthy!
Due to the coronavirus threat, ZLAC is closed to all members and guests. Club events and rowing practices are suspended through at least March 31. Juniors’ practice is suspended through April 5, in accordance with school closures. The Crew Classic has been canceled. We apologize to all those who have been working and training so hard, but the health of our members supersedes our recreation. Stay healthy, everyone!
Our clubhouse and boathouse looked a little different for the past couple of days!
Someone's been practicing on our new erg bike!
