Here's a little perspective for your Thursday morning. According to the CDC (based on estimates of burden), influenza during the 2019-20 season has been respon...sible for 32-45 million illnesses, 310K-560K hospitalizations, 14-21 million medical visits, and 18K-46K deaths with 125 pediatric related deaths. Due to a combination of not being able to adequately test for COVID-19 and the majority of symptoms (around 80% of infected people) being mild, the true fatality rate is likely less than is being reported. Given the continued lack of specific evidence, it's difficult to know exactly where certain numbers and data points actually lie. That being said, taking common sense measurements and not preparing for the apocalypse is likely the best approach. If you are sick, it's likely a good idea to stay home from work, since you can still be a vector and transmit the virus to someone who is at higher risk of more serious complications. Don't listen to our President (which should be something everyone does regardless of any ongoing pandemic), don't wear masks unless actively having cough/fever/breathing symptoms, don't travel to specific CDC identified countries unless absolutely necessary, and don't go to a crowded Costco to stock up on water.
