Hari Kuyo is a Japanese festival dedicated to old and broken needles. Celebrated every year on the 8th of February, artisans who rely on needles for their livelihood, including seamstresses, tailors, embroiderers and weavers come together to hold needle memorial services. This 400-year-old ritual involves sticking old and broken needles into soft chunks of tofu or jelly as a way of showing thanks for their hard work, and also to pray for the improvement of their sewing skil...ls. Our students spend much of their time with needle and scissors in hand. This year was like no other! 2020 was the year of firsts and uncertainty. Common Thread was created this year and we welcomed our first students for sewing classes in February and had to shut down in March due to Covid. To keep our business afloat, I pivoted to making masks for first responders. Then, just in time for Summer Sewing Camps, I was able to reopen in May. In September and October, as we transitioned to Fall classes, we had shut down once more in November and Dece...mber. Through it all you continued to believe in us and our mission for this I am most grateful! Sewing has always kept me engaged and excited. There is something hopeful about focusing our attention on the positive things we can do. This dynamic is the essence of Common Thread Studio, this is what gives me such pleasure to work with your kids. They show up ready to work, ready to learn and are flexible when things don’t go as planned. Despite the interruptions and setbacks, your student has much to be proud of this year.
