For years as a farrier, I became very aware of the propensity for mares to be twitchy & uncomfortable , sometimes downright impossible when ...working on their hind feet. A further interesting observation also cropped up again and again -that the right side, rather than the left , presented issues more often than not .... ( more about near side / off side associations available in the coming book) Along the way , I found that the issue much of the time , not to be training or temperament ( I could very much distinguish) but physically feeling uncomfortable. These particular mares set me on the quest to understand why..... What I found involved the ovaries . It seemed to me the ovaries were out of place & that the mesovarium possibly had wrapped around the ovary and pulled it forward and dorsally. Manually , I could palpate and stretch legs that led me to the source. The pain was clearly caused by pressure from the mesovarium. The odd pull and location of the ovary and pain can be further explained by the functionality of the autonomic nervous system. Visceral pain is transmitted through free nerve endings in the organ wall. Though the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are efferent systems, they share pathways that are also used by the afferent pain sensors. Increased sympathetic or parasympathetic influence can change the base segments they supply. Then add more sensitivity of the spinal nerves and the altered ovary’s mobility and ability to slide within its fascia ....At that point , the ovary and ligaments will be very sensitive to pressure and overstretching. Since then , the reason for mystery on and off hind end lamenesses, disenchanted mood and inconsistent work ethics , difficulties when working on hind feet have been revealed many times over & resolved with applied techniques in the Alchemy Of The Horse methodologies & program. # AlchemyOfTheHorse.com
