This is an interesting summary of current issues and upcoming challenges.
There are some very interesting data sets in this infographic.
If their grades and test scores meet certain cutoffs, Idaho students are now automatically admitted to its public colleges and universities. They get a letter that directs them to a simple form, common to all eight institutions, on which they fill out basic personal information to claim their spot at a specific school. (They also must complete a separate form if they want financial aid.) Instead of asking students to go off and find the college they want to go to, direct admission is really flipping the script, said Jennifer Delaney, an associate professor of higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who is studying the Idaho experiment.
The success stories of these innovators are simply amazing. We are looking forward to hosting colleges representing Robotics and many other pathways to career and college success at our College2Career Fairs in April.
It’s an approach that suggests the fields of literature, history and philosophy have as much to teach programming as they do to learn from it. That kind of thinking is finding its way back into more traditional coding courses elsewhere, like at Harvard, where computer science and philosophy professors teamed up to embed ethics into the coding curriculum and published open-source course modules to encourage the practice.
Have a 7,000 RPM Moment This is not only National School Counselor Week, but also Career Technical Education Month. It's an interesting juxtaposition of celebrations and perhaps more so this year with the movie Ford vs. Ferrari being nominated for a Best Picture Award. A memorable scene in the movie features a racecar driver talking to his son. ... There’s a point at 7,000 RPMs where everything fades: the machine becomes weightless. It disappears. All that’s left, a body moving through space, and time. At 7,000 RPM, that’s where you meet it. That’s where it waits for you. He's talking about a moment of perfection. We won't have that moment driving a racecar 200 miles per hour, but we can have an accomplishment, an understanding, a project, a process or even a smile that reflects perfection. I hope that all my friends and colleagues in the fields of school counseling and CTE have at least one 7,000 RPM moment this week or this month. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if that moment involved helping a student or colleague have or share that moment as well.
Cybersecurity is our second infographic (Game Design was first) that shares a personal success story and listing of our registered Spring 2020 out-of-state and international colleges that support that pathway. Our free Southern California college fairs for high school and community college students will be at Santa Anita Park (4/28) and the Cerritos Performing Arts Center (4/30). The registration form is at https://college2careerfairsconect.org; busing reimbursement is provided for local high schools. https://tinyurl.com/v5rxuzv
