The NPS State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division is excited to announce $70.7 million in State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and Tribal Historic Pres...ervation Office (THPO) annual apportioned grants from the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF)! These grants will distribute $55.7 million in historic preservation grants to SHPOs in the U.S. States, Territories, and Freely Associated States. $15 million in historic preservation grants will go to 200 THPOs. These funds provide much-needed support to our state, tribal, and local partners to preserve their unique cultural heritage for future generations, said NPS Deputy Director Shawn Benge. "Education programs, historic structure rehabilitation and cultural art installations are just some of the diverse and creative ways these grants help further our commitment to telling all American's stories." Administered by the NPS, these funds are appropriated annually by Congress from the Historic Preservation Fund. Since 1977, the HPF has provided more than $2 billion in historic preservation grants to states, tribes, local governments, and non-profit organizations. The HPF is supported by oil lease revenues, not tax dollars, with intent to mitigate the loss of a non-renewable resource to benefit the preservation of other irreplaceable resources. Applications are due April 30th, 2021 SHPOs and THPOs can apply for these grants on grants.gov with opportunity numbers: P21AS00231 and P21AS00000 respectively. 1st photo depicts the John & Landon Carter Mansion 1775-80, courtesy of the Tennessee Historical Commission 2nd photo shows the Structure Protection Crew on the 2020 Inchelium Complex Fire, courtesy of The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation To find out more about these exciting grants, check out our website at: https://www.nps.gov/stlpg/ #STLPG #NPS #HPF #Grants #HPFGrants #SHPO #THPO #HistoricPreservation #ParkPartnerships

In celebration of National Fossil Day: sometime between 15.5 and 9 million years ago, a lone peccary died at the edge of a lake northwest of downtown Los Angeles, in what is now the Angeles National Forest. A few million years later, with oceans once again covering this portion of California, a sea turtle died, a bit to the southwest. From the late 1800s through to today, geoscientists in the Los Angeles area have explored these sediments extensively. In 2008 and 2009, tha...t focus paid off; Cogstone paleontologists working in the Forest had a couple of lucky days. Lindsay Porras discovered that ancient peccary (Platygonus sp.; the first recorded peccary from the late Miocene Mint Canyon Formation) while Kim Scott found that ancient turtle (Cheloniidae; first record of sea turtle from the late Miocene to Pliocene Castaic Formation). Neither of the fossils looked like much a section of peccary limb bone, a scrap of turtle scute but both discoveries, now in the collections of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, have added to our knowledge to the fossil record of our shared public lands. Cogstone's sending a birthday shout out to PI Wendy Teeter!! Hope you have an amazing day Wendy!
Join Cogstone's President Desiree Martinez, Dr. Wendy Teeter and Karimah Richardson for an illuminating lecture. Mystical Romanticism Legends have long told of fantastic beasts and unexplained phenomena. On Catalina Island, located off the coast of Los Angeles, stories of Nephilim, giants, hollowed earth portals, ancient aliens, and white Indians have obscured the actual 10,000+ year history of the Tongva people on Pimungna (as they call Catalina). The Pimu Catalina Island Ar...chaeology Project was founded in 2007 to counteract the deep lack of understanding about Tongva history, the Indigenous people of the Los Angeles basin, and the four Southern Channel Islands. Panelists will share some of their favorite experiences on and historical documents about Catalina Island, and will unpack the implications of its legends. This program is co-presented by Catalina Island Museum. https://lnkd.in/gekAmkd
