Edgar Degas was born on this day in 1834. He was a founding member of the Impressionists, but he did not share his contemporary Claude Monet’s interest in depic...ting the passing effects of light outdoors. Instead he captured the moment by depicting modern life, including racehorses, laundresses, milliners, and especially ballerinas, in innovative ways. Above all he was interested in depicting the fleeting effects of movement. A treasure restored and reframed.... This beautiful painting used to hang in the client’s grandmother’s home many many years ago. On Memorial Day, we remember those who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces by taking a closer look at Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s Shaw Memor...ial (1900). Commissioned to commemorate Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the men of the 54th Massachusetts who died at the battle of Fort Wagner, the bronze version of the Memorial was dedicated on Decoration Day on May 31, 1897. Even after the bronze version was unveiled, Saint-Gaudens continued to modify the plaster, reworking the horse, the faces of the soldiers, and the appearance of the angel above them. This final version was installed at the National Gallery of Art in 1997, on long-term loan from the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Park Service, and the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, New Hampshire. Today we’re returning to gallery 70 on the Main Floor of the West Building to look at the work of Childe Hassam. Hassam was one of a number of American artists ...who took inspiration from the French impressionists to embrace the use of natural light, rapid brushwork, and a bright palette. Hassam was a regular visitor to the Isles of Shoals, nine small, rocky islands off the New Hampshire and Maine coasts. His friend, poet Celia Thaxter, had a home on Appledore Island where writers, visual artists, and musicians gathered in the summers. Hassam’s Poppies, Isles of Shoals presents a broad vista moving from a dense foreground of flowers to a background of rocks, water, and sky. This view, centered on an outcropping called Babb's Rock, was one of the artist's favorites. The island was not as deserted and undeveloped as Hassam suggests in his paintings, but he chose to exclude signs of human presence other than the passing sailboat. The composition is divided into three bands of space, each with distinct colors: green and red for the flowers; blue, purple, and white for the rocks and water; and pale blue for the sky. Hassam's brushwork is equally varied, ranging from lush red and white strokes defining the flowers to long drags of pigment suggesting the multihued surfaces of the rocks.
