Continuing to Honor Black History Month, CLARE | MATRIX highlights the legacy of Black leaders that made it possible for us to do the work we do today. People like Dr. Alexander T. Augusta. Dr. Augusta was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1825 to free African American parents. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland as a youth to work as a barber while pursuing a medical education. The University of Pennsylvania would not accept him but a faculty member taught him privately. In 1847 he ...married Mary O. Burgoin, a Native American. By 1850, Augusta and his wife moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he was accepted by the Medical College at the University of Toronto where he received an M.B. in 1856. He was appointed head of the Toronto City Hospital and was also in charge of an industrial school. Dr. Alexander T. Augusta received a Presidential commission in the Union Army in October 1862. On April 4, 1863, he received a major's commission as surgeon for African-American troops. This made him the United States Army's first Black physician (of a total of eight) and its highest-ranking Black officer at the time. He was also appointed by President Lincoln to lead the Freedman's Hospital in Washington, DC in 1863, becoming the first Black hospital administrator in U.S. history. Thereafter he joined the faculty of Howard University’s medical Department and became the first African American to serve on the faculty of any medical school. Honoring Black History Month 2021: Highlighting Black Pioneers in the Medical Field that make it possible for us to do the work we do today! Dr. Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn a medical degree in the U.S. She graduated from New England Medical College in 1864. Dr. Lee Crumpler worked for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedman, and Abandoned Lands after the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified. Her work caring for formerly enslaved Black people was crucial, because few whit...e doctors would see Black patients. Dr. Crumpler wrote and published the Book of Medical Discourses. She saw that Black communities had an increased risk of epidemics due to precarious living conditions and understood that infections could be prevented by taking appropriate measures. Her book fought the racist notion that Black Americans were more likely to fall ill and die because they were somehow physiologically different from white Americans. She wrote her book to advise and instruct Black women directly about safeguarding their own health, as well as that of their children. Her dedication reads, To mothers, nurses, and all who desire to mitigate the afflictions of the human race, this book is prayerfully offered. My chief desire in presenting this book is to impress upon somebody’s mind the possibilities of prevention. After working assiduously for the bureau, by 1869, Dr. Lee Crumpler had moved back to Boston, where she cared for patients in the local Black community regardless of whether they were able to pay her. - Maxie Clarence Maultsby, Jr, M.D. (1932-2016) In continuing our celebration of Black History Month, CLARE | MATRIX seeks to highlight another pioneer in our field, Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby, Jr. Dr. Maxie is responsible for the development of Rational Behavioral Therapy a precursor to the many Cognitive Behavioral techniques to follow. His contributions to the field enable us to help people obtain and maintain long-term recovery and have contributed to the treatment of... countless people throughout the past 40+ years. Read more about Dr. Maultsby below: Dr. Maultsby was the founder of the psychotherapeutic method, rational behavioral therapy. Through his work and therapeutic method, Dr. Maultsby explored emotional and behavioral self-management. Dr. Maultsby's unique contributions include making emotional self-help a legitimate focus of scientific research and clinical use. Through rational behavior therapy he formulated a comprehensive system of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and counseling that incorporated, in a clinically useful way, the most recent neuropsychological facts about how the brain works in relation to emotional and behavioral self-control. The technique of cognitive-behavioral therapy and counseling that Dr. Maultsby created is the first comprehensive, yet short-term, culture and drug-free technique of psychotherapy that produces long-term therapeutic results. In addition to authoring books for health professional therapists and counselors, Dr. Maultsby has written four pioneering books that describe his method of emotional self-help, called rational self-counseling.
