Winter is coming! You can help cut down on flooding by following a few simple steps. Please remember the street sweeper is not designed to pick-up large piles of leaves. Picking up and disposing of leaves in your green waste bin keeps them from clogging storm drains which can lead to flooding. For your current green waste bin pickup schedule please visit Recology-Dixon’s website at https://www.recology.com/recology-dixon/collection-calendar/ Thank you for your help with reducing and hopefully eliminating flooding! v

IT’S HERE... IT’S HERE... IT’S HERE... CAN YOU BELIEVE IT???!!!! The City of Dixon City Council Chambers has loads of new audio/visual equipment, including wireless microphones, speakers, 6 new cameras, 5 new HD monitors and an entirely new control center platform. Finally, the days of microphone frustration have come to an end. Once we are ready to return to the Chambers in the near future, Council and Commission meetings will be easier to view, to hear and to participate. Thanks to EKC Enterprises and Larry Hunt of Larry Logic for their excellent work in bringing this project to fruition. We are in the final stretch with the next steps being final inspection and issuance of a punch list.

We’ve received a lot of water questions recently and we recognize a little insight goes a long way. Josh, Water Operator, has taken us on a brief tour of the Fitzgerald Tank Site. Take a look at ongoing maintenance work, and learn about past projects and planned work for the future. Thanks to the Water Operations staff. We appreciate everything you do for us here in Dixon! https://youtu.be/DZvhUoSYpRw

Over the last few months, the City of Dixon’s Water Operations Division has been in the process of updating the Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) at the Fitzgerald booster station facility. The VFD is a type of motor controller that drives an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage of its power supply. The VFD also has the capacity to control the ramp-up and ramp-down of the motor during starting or stopping. The facility has three booster pumps, one with a 20 hors...epower (hp) motor, and two with 50hp motors. The VFDs for the motors were outdated, faulty, and needed to be replaced. The majority of electrical energy consumed is from electric motors and the new VFD enable more efficient control over the motors. Today’s VFD technology has reduced the cost and size significantly. For example, one of the old drives removed was four feet tall and weighed approximately 200 pounds, while our new drives are about the size and weight of a standard text book. Since being installed the technology in the new VFDs identified a few issues with older motors, and as a result, we currently have one of the pump/motors removed (see picture above) and it is in for evaluation and repair, which will include a complete pump rebuild, and motor windings rehabilitation. While costly, this project was necessary to keep the water system running efficiently and operating properly.

Anyone remember the Dixon Dolly back in August with her quarantine hairdo? Well, she has since had a Glow Up (ever see that movie with Anne Hathaway) and can no longer make time in her schedule for Parks cameos. But all, we have good news! We’d like to introduce you to Dixie May the Dixon Doggy! ::cringeworthy excited face:: Dixie May is Dixon’s own (not borrowed from a toddler who hasn’t yet mastered the skill of sharing) and will continue to make cameos in some of our social media posts. If you see her please be sure to give her a warm welcome.

Rate payers and utility providers do not always agree. A recent customer survey showed just that. But it's important to take a look at where we DO agree. We're in this together: Building a sustainable water system for the future. Visit www.dixonwaterfacts.org for more information.

Jack Skellington, the Pumpking King of Halloween Town, has paid ours a little visit. Jack Skellington made his third stop to this location. Each of us have our jobs, some of us have to sing carols, others make presents, even the reindeer usually have to pull the sleigh. But this year, we’ve asked Jack if he’d be ok with just riding along with us in one of our tractors. Follow Jack through Halloween and remember all the locations he visited!

Feedback from a recent survey showed water customers want to know, Why does Industrial Well need to be replaced? It’s a great question! Industrial Well was constructed in 1977, which makes it 43 years old. Shouldn’t, municipal wells last at least 100 years? Yes, they should! However, Industrial Well was originally built for agricultural use and is the shallowest well in the water system. There’s more to the story and we’ve created an infographic to explain the reason for needing a new well. Check it out at www.dixonwaterfacts.org/faqs-and-videos.

As I am sure most of you have seen, there has been quite a bit of work being done on North 1st Street by PG&E over the last month or so. PG&E has been rehabilitating some older gas lines throughout the City, but have been pulled away many times in order to help with the wildfires that have been rampant over the last few months. That being said, they are working as fast (and as safely) as they can to make sure that the city’s infrastructure is in tip-top shape! The Engineering Division has been working closely with PG&E to make sure that all the repairs go smoothly and that the restoration of their work areas will meet our standards. Rest assured, the area in front of Luke’s Lounge on North 1st Street, as well as several other locations in Dixon will look good as new in no time.
