Happy New Years! Tax season has now begun to start filing your income taxes of 2018. I have put together some information that hopefully can be useful to you and your loved ones. It is highly important to know the right information when it comes to filing your taxes on your own or by another professional. Even if you choose to come try us out or not for this season, please don't hesitate to ask us any questions you may have. Our goal this year is to help our clients understa...nd how taxes work and what do they mean. Although I do help with tax preparation, this is not a marketing post. This is simply to make sure you are aware on the importance of filing your taxes correctly because a lot more people than you think aren’t receiving what they should be. So I hope this post helps you as a college student or as a parent. 1. Risk of Error If you use TurboTax or any other free e-file please be aware of what you are telling the IRS. Adding a dependent or other options that don’t pertain to you can be costly. What I mean by costly is, you can end up owing to the IRS than what you are receiving back. This error can come and haunt you down the near future. You may miss any tax deductions that you may not know you qualify for. (Especially for college students) Save your receipts from books and supplies. Track your mileage too. 2. You make big bucks Making a lot of money is both a good and bad thing. If you make a certain amount of money even with normal life events and qualifications, you can still end up owing more money than you should. Wouldn’t you like to keep most if not all your money? Going to someone professional can help you hide from the IRS. I say hide because there are different ways to make it seem like you are spending more money that you are saving. This can allow you to invest in properties or make better choices for any future business. 3. Normal Life Events During the year, a lot of things can change. Maybe you got married, divorced, had a new born baby, opened up a new business, or have had a loss. All these normal life events should be added onto your taxes that will allow you gain deductions. Even if you qualify or don’t, for any of these sudden changes it will still prevent you from owning too much. These are things that you won’t be able to claim on e-file or if you didn’t let your tax adviser know of any sudden changes. 4. Going To The Wrong Person We look for professionals to be guided in areas we aren’t aware of or have no idea what they mean. However, some professionals are aware that mostly a lot of people are unaware of how to do taxes or understand taxes. Because of this, there is people who take advantage when it comes to receiving your refund amount. Sometimes you might not even realize what exactly is being put onto your file that later on can have you owing money or have the IRS come find you. Make sure you go with someone trusted and ask questions to better understand.
