Abstract: Resins enhance the quality and cost-effectiveness of metal finishing processes. At the front end, resins provide deionized water for surface finishers. At the back end, resins act as a polisher for wastewater. In between, resins in a dedicated deionizes system helps to minimize water waste by allowing reuse of wastewater. Frank explains how resins work and how to use them advantageously for your finishing processes. Francis J. DeSilva has been employed in the water treatment industry for over 40 years. Frank has a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science Technology from Florida Institute of Technology. Frank holds the position of National Sales Manager for ResinTech Inc., a supplier of ion exchange resins to the O.E.M. market in the United States. He has been with ResinTech, Inc. for 30 years. Prior to that, he was employed by Belco Pollution Control, a division of Foster Wheeler, serving as Manager of the Process Department. He has authored numerous articles on ion exchange and related topics. Frank is a past President of the Pacific Water Quality Association and was the Director of the Liberty Bell Corrosion Course in the 1990’s. HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM aka: Hex-Chrome, Cr6, Chromium 6 Electroplating wet tank process, famously known for its true blue-white in appearance, consider to be the old-fashion chrome from the 40’s to the 80’s, processing requires considerable environmental controls and strict regulations. Possible future banning. TRIVALENT CHROMIUM aka: Tri-Chrome, Cr3 Electroplating wet tank process, grey-white in appearance, consider to be the modern environmentally-friendly chrome processing, chemistry advances made since the 80’s version, now being use in most OEM automotive manufacturing. PVD CHROME (Physical Vapor Deposition) aka: Vapor Chrome, Sputtering Vacuum Chamber Electro-Gas, silver-white in appearance, popular since 2000, often seen on smaller OEM wheels and aftermarket wheels. Alleged to be better for winter salt spray roads. Most black chrome wheels out on the road are likely to be PVD. Here you notice in the back-side with slight orange-peel affect. This PVD chrome process uses a specialized powder-coated primer then apply a mixture of chrome in a specialized PVD vacuum chamber, finally an additional acrylic clear coat.
