CHP WELCOMES NEW OFFICERS EQUIPPED WITH REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE SACRAMENTO, Calif. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) congratulates its 77 new officers who were sworn in today during an unprecedented socially distant graduation ceremony at the CHP Academy. The graduating class begins their new career with more hands-on experience than any class in Academy history. As concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic intensified, the CHP closed its live-in Academy in West Sacramento on March ...20, 2020. All cadets were sent home and assigned to work in CHP Area offices located as close to their residences as practicable. Prior to leaving, the seven women and 70 men of Cadet Training Class (CTC) III-19, who started October 21, 2019, had completed 23 weeks of their 29-week training at the Academy. During the six months spent working in CHP Area offices throughout the state, cadets had an unprecedented opportunity to observe a wide variety of activities and tasks, enhancing their classroom work. On ride-alongs with officers, they experienced a CHP officer’s shift in the field and learned first-hand how to complete crash reports and assist the public. They also learned the administrative side of the job filing reports, answering the phone, and performing general tasks that may be unfamiliar to many officers. On September 14, 2020, all members of CTC III-19 who left in March returned to the Academy for their final weeks of training with enhanced health and safety protocols. We are all so proud of this class, CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. These cadets faced the uncertainty of the pandemic with resolve and returned to the Academy energized about their new careers, benefiting from a wealth of real-life experience that no other cadets have had. At the CHP Academy, cadet training starts with nobility in policing, leadership, professionalism and ethics, and cultural diversity. Training also includes mental illness response and crisis intervention techniques. Cadet instruction covers patrol operations, crash investigation, first aid, and the arrest of suspected violators, including those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The cadets also receive training in traffic control, report writing, recovery of stolen vehicles, assisting the motoring public, issuing citations, emergency scene management, and knowledge of various codes including the Vehicle Code, Penal Code, and Health and Safety Code. Upon graduation, the cadets are assigned to CHP Area offices throughout the state. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. ### See more

CHP REMINDS PARENTS TO BE ROLE MODELS FOR TEEN DRIVERS SACRAMENTO, Calif. Teen drivers can face challenges with every new experience. During National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18-24, 2020, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to encourage parents and guardians to discuss driver safety with their young drivers.... Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, ahead of any type of injury, disease, or violence. According to preliminary data from the CHP’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, 255 people in California were killed last year in crashes involving drivers aged 15-19. Teen drivers do not have the experience needed when confronted with new challenges on the road. This can create a potential danger to themselves and others, CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. Through open communication and by setting an example with their own good driving habits, parents and guardians can help keep their young drivers safe. Discussions about safe driving include avoiding distractions such as cell phones, using seat belts, obeying speed limits, not driving impaired, and limiting the number of passengers. Parents and guardians must be aware that their own driving behavior and following the same rules is as important as any conversation they may have with their teen. The CHP provides education to help keep teen drivers alive in its Start Smart course, offered by all CHP offices free of charge. Participating in Start Smart will help parents and guardians learn how to effectively discuss the importance of driving safely with their young drivers. Start Smart also teaches driver responsibility, the Graduated Driver License program, and collisionavoidance techniques. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Start Smart classes are being held online. Contact your local CHP Area office for information on how to enroll. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. # # # See more

The California Highway Patrol is dedicated to supplying the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security to all who live, work, and travel in this great state.... With this focus, the CHP is partnering with local, state, and public health agencies to help slow the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The CHP plays a supportive role on the statewide task force, serving as a resource for state regulatory agencies that are focusing on businesses and workplaces not complying with the state’s safety guidelines. The best way people can protect themselves and others from COVID-19 is by wearing a face covering and practicing physical distancing when in public. The goal is to educate people about how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and encourage them to self-regulate their behavior and adhere to the California Department of Public Health guidance. MAINTAIN YOUR INDEPENDENCE DRIVE SAFE, DRIVE SOBER SACRAMENTO, Calif. Wherever people choose to observe Independence Day, they can expect the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to be out in force for a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) from 6 p.m. on Friday, July 3, to midnight, Sunday, July 5. As California gradually reopens, many people will be eager to celebrate the holiday weekend with family and friends. To help reduce the risk and slow the spread of COVID-19, the Cal...ifornia Department of Public Health is urging the public to avoid traveling long distances for vacations or pleasure as much as possible. However, if you decide to leave home, take steps to keep everyone safe like wearing face coverings, physical distancing, and washing hands frequently. "Should the upcoming weekend include a road trip, stay safe and healthy with a few additional precautions," said CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley. Obeying speed limits, buckling up, and not driving impaired or distracted will be more important than ever. Traffic has been lighter on California roadways the past few months, which has resulted in an increase in citations for excessive speed. Motorists are encouraged to take their time this holiday weekend and arrive safely at their destination. During the recent Memorial Day MEP, CHP officers issued 458 citations for speeding in excess of 100 mph, which is a 173 percent increase from the same period in 2019. The 2019 Independence Day MEP was 4 days, which was two days longer than the upcoming MEP. During that 102-hour enforcement effort, 36 people lost their lives in traffic crashes, 21 within CHP jurisdiction. Of those 21 individuals, 11 were not wearing seat belts. Additionally, CHP officers made 1,317 arrests for driving under the influence. However you choose to celebrate the weekend, do it without putting yourself or others at risk, added Commissioner Stanley. The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security. # # #
