As a bodyworker & healer I learned early on it’s important to ground myself with the type of work I do. One of the easiest ways I do this is time in nature. A simple walk around the neighborhood looking at the gorgeous plants and slowing down can do it. It causes me to be in the present and remember my breath. These little yellow flowers reminded me chamomile, one one my favorite calming oils. What types of things help ground you?

About a month ago, I hurt my back, like bad. And I should know, haha! But seriously, I have been wanting to post about this for awhile and am finally getting ...around to it. I wanted to post about my experience as the patient because a lot of my patients at Harmony Health Chiropractic are curious so hopefully this helps someone or is at least interesting. So, I was at the gym on a Monday doing "half-squat swings", basically like a kettle bell type exercise. First set felt a little dodgy in my low back so I went down in weight. Good idea. Then, next round, I noticed the two women next to me doing a higher weight. Bad idea. Your ego will always get you in trouble in the gym! Mine said, "you're as strong as them, come on pick up that heavier weight". And, I did. Worse idea. My low back blew up and I collapsed to the ground for a while. I stretched and breathed and got up and walked on the treadmill a little but I could tell it was pretty bad. Went straight to my office on the way home, where DrBonnie Fischer DC adjusted me (thank you!!). I always try to get adjusted as soon as possible after an injury because it really helps bring down the recovery time. Went home and tried to go grocery shopping but driving had me in tears. Tried ice, made the spasm worse so stuck with heat. Started taking Turmeric Forte from Standard Process. The next day (Tuesday) felt just as bad and I had to cancel all of my patients (bummer). This is when the anxiety set in. I had never hurt my low back this badly before, it felt like it could be bad for a LONG time. How could I work? How could I take care of my kids? What if, what if, what if? My dear, lovely friend Christina Fecht Awad of Christina Joy Awad Massage and Craniosacral Therapy came by and did some craniosacral on me, which helped a lot. I got up and moved more easily after that. The next day, on Wednesday, I got adjusted again. Still on heat and turmeric. On Thursday, I worked and adjusted patients with a couple of coats of essential oils (AromaSiez and Wintergreen) on my low back and was no worse for it. By Saturday, I was back in the gym, taking things slowly. By a week later, I was good as new!! I couldn't really believe it and am so grateful that my body healed so quickly. And, now, I am much more motivated to listen to my body in the gym and use proper form. What do I want you to get out of this?? Don't let your ego drive your workout! If you get hurt, get bodywork right away! If you don't already have a chiropractor, find one immediately If you made it all the way through this post, thank you, hope you got SOMETHING out of it, haha
