Choi's Martial Arts Fremont 09.04.2021

Dear Choi's Families, Happy New Year! We are excited to announce that a new schedule will be starting to meet the needs of our students starting Monday, Februar...y 1st, 2021. The new schedule is designed to enhance the understanding and the performance of the students on the curriculum of our program. Here are the key points of the enhanced new program: 1. There are two types of classes during the week: curriculum (mostly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, in blue letters); drills (mostly Tuedays and Thursdays in red letters). Curriculum class is 20 minutes, but it will be solidly curriculum only class without warm-up or other drills. Drill class will be mostly kicking drills and sparring drills. 2. There are more classes offered during the week. Our suggestion is to participate in the curriculum classes twice a week and a drill class once a week. 3. Class limits: one-year program student may participate two curriculum classes and one drill class maximum. 4. Weekly curriculum notice: we will notice all the students about the detailed plan on the curriculum and the drills of the week, either bi-weekly or monthly basis. See more

Dear Choi's Families, Greetings! As we continue with shelter in place throughout May, I extend my concern and wishes to all our Choi's Families. I hope you sta...y healthy and are growing closer to each other in your family. I truly appreciate all the support that Choi's families shown during this pandemic "war." Even though some activities are reopened, our category is not yet to be opened. The dojang will be closed for the time being. Even though we don't have the physical contact of the classroom, however, I have found that students are making good progress even through online classes. Please join our free online zoom classes throughout the week. (Schedule attached) For those who are participating in the zoom class, we are currently helping them to prepare for their belt test through private lessons. I congratulate all the test participants testing on May 7th, 2020 online, for their dedication and preparation. The belt-level zoom classes are 30 minutes long, with an instructor break-out so that we can give more personal attention to all the students. In preparation for testing, we have been offering special small-group sessions, as well as a private lesson/assessment to be sure students are ready to test. The test itself is broken down by a belt level. We did not know how this Shelter would play out for your classes: we are proud of the flexibility and cooperation which has made it possible to continue to offer lessons. We are pleased to help you keep active and progressing in your practice. Please join us in the zoom class and keep in touch! Stay healthy and see you soon, Kind regards! GM Choi

Dear Choi's Families, Greetings! While we are going through a difficult time of Covid-19 threat to our community, we are taking extra cleaning and safety precautions:... We are cleaning the Dojang thoroughly every day: floors, door handles, light switches, counters, etc. Before the beginning and at the end of each class, all students will be directed to the bathroom to wash their hands with soap For the time being, we will do more solo techniques rather than contact exercises We will arrange more gaps between students during practice. We will not be collecting attendance cards. Instructors will check students in with attendance sheet If your child or someone in the household is coughing, sneezing, or has signs of the flu, please let your child stay home. Instructors might ask a student to leave the mat in case of severe coughing. Let's all do our part to help ourselves and each other stay healthy! If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know. Kind regards! Grandmaster Alexander EJ Choi

On February 25th, our school celebrated 20th anniversary with our 18th Kicking for Miracles to benefit UCSF Children's Hospital. We raised over $9k. A few students broke their piggy banks, which result in counting tons of coins with gratitude. This event is going to be required from this year toward earning points for a student's black belt testing. GM Choi's college friend, Mr. Sang Gyu Choi, a baritone opera singer and the conductor of A10 brought his team from Seoul, Korea to sing for us as our anniversary celebration. It really touched the heart of all the participants of the event. Mayor of Fremont, Lily Mei and the delegate of the hospital Dr. David Lynch made a donation at the spot as well. It was an actualization of one of our mission statements: teaching students the importance of community involvement through Taekwondo.

Choi's Martial Arts Festival 2016 Dear Parents and Students, Thanks to your support, I am proudly announcing to launch our 7th Annual Martial Arts Festival this... year. This event is an internal tournament between Union City and Fremont schools. While teaching Taekwondo for over 30 years, I have noticed a tournament is a boost for a lot of students. It gives a new objective to students. It helps them to work harder to earn their prizes. As a result, students are getting more excited about practicing Taekwondo to maximize their benefit. This tournament is unique in various ways from other tournaments: 1. We provide fair judging system not only by trained judges, but also by a well developed judging principle. 2. This is a festival and a friendly competition, which encourages students to strive. There will be three categories of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and yet everyone will get a prize. The emphasis is on participation and doing "your best", not being "the best." 3. For the form competition, each competitor will perform alone, so that the judges will have full attention to the competitor. (Most competitions allow 2 or three competitors in one session.) 4. All the competitors who register before October 2nd 2016 will receive a free T-shirt. 5. Special performance by Demo Team. 6. Special occasion to bring friends to show what you are doing (Free Admission). The tournament is a highly labor collective event. Volunteers are welcome. If you can give us a hand, please sing up at the front desk and come to the volunteer meeting on October 15th 2016 at 8:00 am at the tournament site. Schedule of the day (subject to change depending on the flow of the event) 08:00 a.m. 08:30 a.m. Volunteer check in & T-shirt pick-up 08:30 a.m. 08:45 a.m. Students pick up competitor cards 08:45 a.m. 09:00 a.m. All competitors line up for pre-staging 09:00 a.m. 09:15 a.m. Opening Ceremony and Demonstration 09:15 a.m. 10:45 a.m. Form Competition 10:45 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Board Breaking Competition 11:45 a.m. 12:45 p.m. Sparring Competition Place CENTERVILLE JR. HIGH SCHOOL, 37720 Fremont Blvd. Fremont, CA 94536 (Free Parking) What are the divisions and how can I participate in? We have 5 different divisions: Form division: Form is a combination of movements. All students learn a form per their belt level. For tiny tigers, we expect a striped red belt student should perform the form properly. Breaking Division: Any student (including tiny tigers) can break a board. Please ask your master to discuss what break you are going to perform at the tournament. White through St. Green Belt will break one board; Blue to Black 2 boards. Synchronized form: Two or more people can perform at the same time. Judges are going to focus on their teamwork and expression along with the basic categories for forms. Olympic Sparring: Any student of yellow belt and above may participate in this division if you are participating in sparring class. Non-Contact Sparring: Any student of yellow belt and above may participate in this division as we practice during the class all the time. How do the judges evaluate your score? 1. Form Competition: The judges will give points in the following categories: balance, coordination, power, rhythm, focus and concentration 2. Synchronized Form Competition: The judges will give points in the following categories: teamwork, expression, rhythm, coordination and precision, balance, focus and concentration, power 3. Breaking The judges will give points in the following categories: balance, proper preparation and finish, difficulty of the movements, precision of technique, number of repetition. 4. Olympic Sparring One point is awarded for a clean kick on the chest and rib area. No head kick or under the belt is allowed. 5. Non-Contact Sparring This sparring is a non-contact sparring, so that there is no contact to the partner. The scoring area is the stomach or the rib area of your partner. A clean technique on those areas will allow a point. The judges will give points immediately after a technique is executed. There will be two corner judges and a referee who award points. One round is 2 minute long. A person who gets 3 points first or higher point will be the winner. If both competitors tie, the one who gets a point first will be the winner.
