Initiating cognitive exercises are part of what a Cerna caregiver does. An example of a cognitive exercise is working with money. The complexity levels of the exercise range from 1 to 7, with 1 being the least complex. Level 1 is about identification of coins where several are scattered on the table. Then, the care recipient is asked to verbally name the coin types and sort them. The Cerna caregiver also directs the care recipient to pick up a quarter, pick up a pen...ny, now, pick up a dime. Higher levels of this exercise identify coins by feel, engage in making change, introducing paper money in making change ... up to having the care recipient plan a trip to the store and go to the store together.
