FYI, on Friday, Feb. 26, just a few hours after KTLA ran a six-minute piece featuring actor Tamlyn Tomita and Boyle Hts. activist Carlos Montes, Pacifica Compan...ies sent a notification to the residents of the Sakura Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) on 325 S. Boyle Ave. notifying the families of the 80's to 100's year old residents that they are moving forward with plans to transfer them out to make way for their plans to convert it to a market-rate rental building. These aren't eviction notices being served YET, but announcement of intent to develop "plans" to move everyone out. IOW, a pre-eviction notification. Problem: There is no other facility like the Sakura ICF that provides the same bilingual and bi-cultural care for Japanese American and Japanese seniors in the entire country. Pacifica is looking at sending them to places like the Kei-Ai skilled nursing facility (SNF), which has become, thanks also to Pacifica's mismanagement, the highest COVID-19 death-rate SNF in the entire state. Pacific Companies has submitted plans to convert the ICF to market rate apartments to LA City. The grassroots network, Save Our Seniors, along with the Boyle Heights Neighborhood council, will be mobilizing to protest at the Planning and Land Use Management meeting when it hits the agenda. This development is not only an attack on what is left of the historic Japanese American community in Boyle Heights, but stands to exacerbate gentrification and displacement/gentrification pressures already well-underway in Boyle Heights. Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to let everyone know what's going on: Another pinche international developer screwing over our peoples and communities to make a profits. I apologize that our community was not able to stop the evil Executive Board of the Keiro non-profit that screwed not only Japanese American seniors over but allowed this attack on Boyle Heights to happen by selling the property to Pacifica Companies back in 2016. (Sakura ICF is only one of the units at the 325 S. Boyle Ave. Sakura Gardens senior care complex, formerly the Keiro Nursing and Retirement Homes, and Jewish Retirement Homes before that) - the other two are the Sakura Gardens Assisted Living facility and a Memory Care facility for dementia patients...)

Another Chicano brother of the movement has passed: Miguel Mickey dela Peña from City Terrace. He was active in Mexican-American Student Association, and La Vid...a Nueva T ELA College. He got married and marched on August 29th 1970 at the Chicano Moratorium. He also helped us at ELA College organize a student strike demanding Chicano & Black Studies where the ELA Sheriff's came on campus and beat and arrested students!! See more
