Want to learn from a roller derby legend?! Show up to the SLO Skate Park today at 1pm for this awesome class with Clif Butler, hosted by the Coast Skate Club. Butler started skating for a minor league team in 1961 when he was only 13 years old and started his professional skating career for the Pioneers just four years later. He soon after skated for his "dream team" the Bay Area Bombers and then started coaching the Jolters by the time he was 20 years old. #BlackHistoryMo...nth #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistoryMatters #PeopleWhoSkate https://fb.me/e/4ZxOEDkyU

"George 'Little Georgie' Copeland was the first African American to strap on a pair of roller skates for a professional roller derby team. He was also quite possibly the sport’s youngest player, breaking into the league at the age of 16 when he signed with the Los Angeles Braves in 1956. He later helped form the legendary Los Angeles T-Birds with whom he would both play and coach" (flikr.com). Copeland was inducted into the Roller Derby Hall of Fame on January 18, 2005. ... #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistoryMatters #RollerDerbyMemories #CCRD #WeSkateForEquality #nonprofit #charity #15yearsofchanginglives #CentralCoast #SLOlife Sources: https://www.flickr.com/photos/selfishcauses/2231993294

Darlene Anderson made history in 1958 when she became the first African American female roller derby professional skater. "Anderson’s [roller derby] career took her all over the nation and the world. She skated for the Hawaii All Stars, San Francisco Bay Bombers, New York Chiefs, Los Angeles Braves, and many other powerful roller derby teams" (lasentinel.net). After she retired from Roller Derby, she was again placed in a trail blazer position. She was the first black woman..., on the west coast anyway, to become a Pari-Mutuels Clerk with the Southern California Racing Association (blackmail4u.com). Anderson said, "everyone's eyes were upon me. After all, I am black and right there in front of everyone to see. As with Roller Derby, I held my head proudly, and did and do my job as a professional person" (derbymemoirs). #BlackHistoryMonth #blacklivesmatter #BlackHistoryMatters #CCRD #weskateforequality #peoplewhoskate #SLOlife #RollerSkating #RollerDerbyMemories #centralcoast Sources: https://lasentinel.net/darlene-anderson-broke-roller-derby- https://blackmail4u.com//darlene-anderson-1st-african-ame/ http://derbymemoirs.bankedtrack.info/Anderson_Darlene.html

Happy birthday to one of CCRD's co-founders, Rotten Peaches! Rotten Peaches and Señorita Cheeba decided that the women on the Central Coast needed an outlet that allowed them to express themselves and escape the mundaneness of their everyday lives, while giving back to the community. In 2006, they formed the first flat-track roller derby league here on the Central Coast of California, and the rest is history. Thank you, Peaches! Enjoy your day!... #CCRD #WeAreDerby #15yearsofchanginglives #nonprofit #charity #giveback #PeopleWhoSkate #CCRDfounder #CCRDbirthday
