THE YARDBIRDS - SHAPE OF THINGS (in colour) This week in 1966, THE YARDBIRDS release the single SHAPE OF THINGS / YOU'RE A BETTER MAN THAN I in the UK (February... 1966) : ' . The line-up in this 1967 clip is Keith Relf (lead vocals), Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar), Jim McCarty (drums) and Jimmy Page (lead guitar). Written by Paul Samwell-Smith, Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty, originally recorded by The Yardbirds and released as a single in 1966, the song title bore a striking resemblance to The Shape of Things to Come, the "future history" book by H.G. Wells which foresaw cities being destroyed by aerial bombing. The song is one of The Yardbirds' best-known songs due to Jeff Beck's guitar solo, which contained heavy amounts of fuzztone and feedback, both rare at the time. Beck re-worked the song two years later with his own group, appearing as the lead-off track to the 1968 album Truth, with vocals by Rod Stewart. In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Shapes of Things" at number 61 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. ------------------------------------------------ Hello, and a warm welcome to everyone who has joined COLOURING THE PAST. The page is my attempt to add a little colour to the cheeks of the past. It's not intended to offer anything 'better' than the original black & white footage; just a different take. Running the page is a one-man operation. I write and research the articles, and edit the videos which involves several hours of work - upscaling, colourising and tweaking in various software. If you could see fit to make a small donation then I would be genuinely very grateful. Being with him when he died was something I will never forget. His bravery. His happiness. His acceptance. It was a colossal experience for me. Changed my life... completely in a way that I had not expected. I expected to feel sad and lost. But I felt the opposite. Just, like, ‘Boy, this is it. This is all we have. Right here. So you’d better pay attention.’ Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed See more

This week on DEAD AIR with Cory Daniels: Tony Rice, bluegrass innovator with a guitar pick, has joined the great jam in the sky. The nimble king of flatpicking - flatpicking, a technique that involves striking a guitar’s strings with a pick or plectrum instead of with the fingers. His 1979 album Manzanita is sacred text in bluegrass, with guests like Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Ricky Skaggs, and David Grisman. For 1980’s Mar West, Rice mixed bluegrass with elements of jazz and f...olk to create a hypnotic style he called spacegrass. In 1983, he won a Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance for Fireball, and would become a six-time recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Associan’s Guitar Player of the Year, most recently winning the title in 2007. In 2013, he was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame In the 1980s Rice also began playing in David Grisman's quartet, which led to the most famous accidental release in all of recorded bluegrass, The Pizza Tapes. Over two February nights in 1993, David Grisman, a mandolin player, and Tony Rice were fooling around in the studio, and Grisman invited his buddy, Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia to come sit in. By this time, Garcia and Grisman had a relationship for decades, going back to the group Old and In The Way. The trio tore through a number of classics (making some unexpected detours) and then, so the legend goes, a pizza delivery guy stole Jerry Garcia's copy, which then ended up on the bootleg market. In 2000, the first official release was put out. We get into some of those Pizza Tape recordings and of course some rockin' Grateful Dead tunes. Tune in Friday night at midnight after DREW ROSS and Sunday at 10pm after JOE FRANK. 97.3-107.9 The Rock, streaming online at CentralCoastRadio.org
